Christmas Eve, 9-10pm, ITV1
It’s the hundredth episode of ‘Taggart’ – but don’t expect any party balloons: this is a typically sober, efficient murder mystery, albeit with a modern technological twist. A raid on a mobile phone shop leads to the discovery of a phone that belonged to a murder victim. The case went unsolved, and so the team must track down the owner: a university lecturer. Thus, the detectives find themselves in a world of authors and intellectuals – well, in theory: the professorial characters only display cunning when it suits the plot. The acting’s variable, and the script’s unnaturalistic dialogue doesn’t always help. Still, the first half ticks along nicely, and fans of the show will find it perfectly acceptable, if not up there with the best of them over the past 99 instalments. Feature continues
