The Theory of Everything

Rating: 4/5

At its best, this affecting biopic of the cosmos-rattling astrophysicist Stephen Hawking (Eddie Redmayne) smartly avoids schmaltz. Hawking has often seen the dark humour in the disease that began robbing him of his muscular functions as early as his...

Annie

Rating: 2/5

Updating the story from the Great Depression to the Great Recession, this new ‘Annie’ is a candied corporate fantasia. Annie (Quvenzhané Wallis) is now a plucky New York foster kid who, by chance, becomes the live-in ward of an antisocial billionaire...

Arthur Christmas

Rating: 3/5

This smart and very British 3D animation from the Aardman stable opens with one of life’s great questions: how does Santa visit so many homes so quickly? The answer, it seems, is a high-tech army of elves dispatched, SAS-style, from a silent spaceshi...

Before I Go to Sleep

Rating: 3/5

If there was as much injury-related memory loss in real life as in the movies, we’d all be walking around with pillows Sellotaped to our heads. This latest high-concept amnesia thriller stars Nicole Kidman as Christine, an English woman who can no lo...

Big Eyes

Rating: 2/5

Forget about the big eyes and wonder instead at the even bigger size of Christoph Waltz’s overplayed performance in this peculiar, disappointing true-life drama from Tim Burton, better known for the bigger-budget likes of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and ‘C...

Birdman

Rating: 5/5

‘Most of the successful people in Hollywood are failures as human beings.’ So said Marlon Brando. But what happens when their 15 minutes are up? It’s not like failure suddenly transforms former mega-celebs into humble human beings who can pick up the...

Dumb and Dumber To

Rating: 3/5

Exactly two decades after ‘Dumb and Dumber’, Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels are back as cinema’s most improbably tolerable pair of morons in a sequel that looks like a cash-grab but works like a time machine. It may not be quite as funny as the first on...
