Messiaen's acute ear and imagination led him to hear undertones of Balinese music in the strophes of the blue rock thrush, his 'Le Merle Bleu' from the 'Catalogue d'Oiseaux', played here by students from the Royal Academy of Music. André Jolivet had a markedly different style to Messiaen, but shared with him a penchant for both ancient Greece and the exotic. Tonight we can hear his 'Chant de Linos', plus Messiaen's 'Ile de Feu – 14 Etudes de Rhythme' and 'Le Merle Noir' for flute and piano; and Ravel's 'Chansons Madecasses'.
