Daniele Gatti conducts the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, with pianist John Lill. Brahms Piano Concerto No 2; R. Strauss 'Tod und Verklärung' and 'Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche'. Brahms began writing his Piano Concerto No 2 in 1878 and completed it in 1881, and jokingly described it as a 'tiny, tiny piano concerto, with a tiny wisp of a scherzo', which is a huge understatement. Meanwhile, Richard Strauss was inspired by the adventures of the roguish Till Eulenspiegel to write his masterly comic score, which heralded in a new era in orchestral writing.
