A blend of song and choreography created from the distinctive experiences and insights of individuals living in one London Street and its environ, namely composer Helen Chadwick's local community in Dalston, East London, where many different cultures co-exist. Chadwick has interviewed her neighbours, born in many parts of the world, hearing their stories and memories on the subject of 'home'. For some this means life in a new country, escape from a war zone or arrival from a destroyed home land. For others the tales are more domestic: gossip, food, shelving, dust, mice and table songs. These stories have become the basis for the lyrics as well as powerful texts by Serbian, Argentinean, Palestinian, and Turkish poets. 'Dalston Songs' is performed a cappella by eight singers:Dave Camlin, Barbara Gellhorn, Hazel Holder, Kevin Kyle, James Lailey, from the UK, Soraya Mahdaoui from Algeria, Helen Chadwick herself and Nawros Oramari from Dalston who is also one of the interviewees. Steven Hoggett from physical theatre company Frantic Assembly choreographs and co-directs the work with design by Miriam Buether, lighting by Chahine Yavroyan and sound design by Duncan Chave.
