Why did you choose the oboe?
‘When I was 13 I joined a local military band. They had run out of clarinets and all that was left was an old oboe that nobody wanted to touch.’
Do you ever wish you played another instrument?
‘No, although sometimes when I’m making reeds…’
Where do you sit in the orchestra?
‘Right in the middle.’
What can you hear where you sit?
‘Everything.’
How much is your instrument worth?
‘About £4,500. But it has to be replaced every four years.’
Your favourite pieces for the instrument?
‘Most symphonies.’
When are you playing next in London?
‘On October 8 with Camerata Ireland.’
