DJ Pierre was making tunes with his mate Spanky when they created acid house: ‘When I came over,’ recalls Pierre, ‘he already had a beat playing, but he wasn’t turnin’ the knobs on the TB-303 [Roland synthesiser]. I started doing that, changing the sound, and we were like “Wow! That sounds good!” ’
DJ Pierre’s ‘Acid Trax’ EP introduced Chicago to the squelches and aural squiggles of acid house back in 1986, but Mulletover’s birthday bash celebrates 20 years of (acid) house raving in the UK. It’s two decades since clubbers at Shoom and Spectrum were jacking into the future and two of the most important records of ’88 were ‘Acid Trax’ and ‘Voodoo Ray’ by A Guy Called Gerald.
Both DJ Pierre and A Guy Called Gerald will play at this anniversary. True to form, it’s in a secret warehouse location in which one room goes Back to the Old Skool with DJ Pierre and the wonderful Trevor Fung juxtaposing classic tunes with upfront tech-house.
In the other Back to the Future room A Guy Called Gerald plays a live set of his raw and fresh beats alongside upfront DJ sets by Geddes, Below’s Adam Shelton and Intacto’s Dutch label boss Shinedoe. Mulletover’s crowd is renowned for their dress-up capers so a sartorial theme of ‘1988’ is sure to inspire them. It’s not about authentic looks though; it’s about having a right old (and totally new) rave!
