  • ‘To be honest,’ says Matt V, the man behind Dublime, ‘I feel like I’m playing Fantasy Club Promoter at the moment.’ And well he might. It’s not often you get to book your hero to headline your club night, and Matt – as a man whose particular club night is dedicated to dub –  could not find a more appropriate (or bizarrely dressed) hero than Lee Scratch Perry.

    Perry – heavyweight producer, kung-fu obsessive, alleged studio arsonist, and all-round reggae supremo – was one of the prime instigators of dub music and he’ll headline on Sunday supported by the special guests he’s been making his latest album with.

    ‘I see dub as being at the heart of all electronic music,’ Matt explains, ‘from jungle and dubstep to minimal techno.’ To prove his point, he’s assembled a stellar line-up to celebrate all things dub. Perry will be joined in room one by fellow reggae legend Don Letts, dubsteppers Caspa & Rusko and junglists extraordinaire Dillinja and Congo Natty. Upon exiting that arena – with your head buzzing like a freshly struck church bell – you’ll be greeted by, among others, the dubby minimal of German techno specialist Pole and the future dub of Kode 9.

    Having assembled such a varied a line-up, Matt is expecting an equally diverse crowd. ‘Lee Perry is one of those guys who’s got mass appeal,’ he says. ‘I was on dubstepforum.com recently and saw a post about tonight that read, “My stepdad’s going to this as well!”’

    It seems that – from jungle to dubstep, reggae to techno and the kids to the old folks – the boom and shudder of dub music really is all-conquering, so make sure you head down to pay homage. Trust us, the Fabric speakers will be happy they’ve got Monday off to recover.
