  • Twenty years after acid house became a socio-cultural phenomenon in the UK, house can truly claim to be a global beast. It’s nights like this which prove the point: there’s a kind of post-colonial payback, as house DJs who are big news in India, Japan, Australia and South Africa come to play in the heart of the country where, arguably, house music has had the greatest impact.

‘The house music market has stabilised here,’ says Defected press don Toni Tambourine, ‘but everywhere else, especially in eastern Europe, India and Asia, it’s still growing. We’re keen to show what they’re doing because they’re brilliant.’ Defected rightly figures that London has a truly cosmopolitan clubbing demographic in which people are likely to respond positively to DJ stars from their countries of origin.

DJ Pearl (pictured, above right), who’s inspiring clubbers in Mumbai, Delhi and (especially)Bangalore to take a break from Bollywood dance remixes and get into her deep, techy and soulful house instead, is one of them, and like Melbourne-based Wei-Shen (Those Usual Suspects), she’ll DJ in Ibiza this summer. Many are long-established producers too, including South Africa’s Vinny Da Vinci, Japan’s DJ duo Studio Apartment and Tomoki Tamura. But just in case you thought that Defected was chancing its arm with so many UK DJ debuts, they’ve got Master At Work Kenny ‘Dope’ Gonzalez to represent America while France’s Claude Monnet and local boy Aaron Ross are the Euro contingent.

Talking of masters at work, Dragon, a Japanese artist whose work was recently featured in Observer Music Monthly, will paint a specially commissioned piece during the night, so you can brush up on art as well as geography and music.

Have your say
