  • Clubbing in Paris

  • By Patrick Welch

  • 3am We head downstairs to check out Skulljuice and Casper C, who run the monthly Bloggers Delight night at Camden’s Lock Tavern. Casper suggests that the difference between French and English clubbing could be that ‘clubbing in Paris has more of a social, hanging out element to it.’ I’m not sure if the army of nu-rave kids going nuts to Digitalism would agree, but he has a point.

4am Back upstairs and things kick off; Sebastian’s set even features some crowd-surfing. By now it is positively tropical and a lot of boys are really suffering for their look: wilting in leather jackets, hats and sweatshirts. There is sweat dripping from the ceiling.

4.30am By the time Ed Banger boss, Pedro ‘BusyP’ Winter, comes on we’ve been going for 12 hours and are a little worse for wear. Despite feeling queasy after drinking some tap water (not advisable) we persevere. The night ends in rock ’n’ roll style with Pedro playing ‘Live And Let Die’ and telling us upon leaving how ‘completely fucked up’ he is.

7am Lights are turned on and we’re booted out into the pouring rain. We decide this might have been a better idea in the summer. We warm up on the Metro and head to Le Pied de Cochon, a 24-hour restaurant in Les Halles. The booths, pastel murals and marble make for a surreal Aberdeen Angus Steakhouse meets ancient Rome vibe. Everyone is drunk and feasting. The folk next to us even start hurling oysters at each other.

8.30am As it’s stopped raining we decide on an invigorating dawn walk to Gare du Nord. Upon entering the station Des’ree’s ‘Life’ (‘Oh life, oh life’) is playing at full blast which makes us giggle non-stop.

10.19am We board the train and fall asleep discussing whether we’d do it again. Maybe better in summer, maybe better with a hotel, maybe… Zzzzzzzz.
