  • Goldie: interview

  • Interview: Damian Bennett

  • Goldie‘s mind, ever a seething temple of holistic, alchemic creativity, found time to talk to Time Out about his momentary reversion to his Rufige Cru moniker for his exceptional upcoming LP, ’Malice In Wonderland‘, about his film project, about the entire history of drum ‘n‘ bass and, well, cows.

  • Is that a cow sampled on the ‘Special Request’ track?
‘The “mmmm” sample? You know what it is? It’s me! If I got a decent budget for a video I’d put a fuckin’ cow in for that bit.’

On the effortless vibe of his album
‘It’s me having fun, but it is also purist, especially in regard to ‘Monkey Boy’. After I broke my leg [remember that horrifying TV incident on ‘The Games’?] I found I had more energy to work than ever. But this is the quiet before the storm.’

So it’s part of a bigger plan?
‘I made an album three years ago, the soundtrack to [Goldie’s film project] “Sine Tempus”, which I took seven years to write. The film has come to fruition and I’m glad it’s taken this long. “Malice…” is the stepping stone.’

    What about D&B now?
‘I’m reminded of a beautiful photograph which faded to black and white. But it’s up to us: we created a monster and now have to learn to harness it. In this scene some people build matchstick houses and I ask “Is it gonna last?” My house is a fuckin’ fortress, full of substance, the footings set firm into the ground.’

On the lack of new Goldies in the D&B scene:

‘Well, there's not going to be, same as there’s no new [graffiti artist] Futura. Either way, if you’re gonna take on the old firm you’ll have to do as much work: a one-hit wonder ain’t gonna stick.’

Goldie heads a massive D&B line-up in the One Nation arena at Tranz-Mission, London’s biggest indoor dance party of the year, at Alexandra Palace on Saturday.
