If you really love deep soulful house, you’ll make straight for SeOne on Saturday. Bobby & Steve Present… Louie Vega features the Masters at Work star and two arches of uplifting house, but also combines the breaks and broken beat of Bugz in the Attic Sound System with an all-star Funk Room DJ squad, making a multi-arena festival-style adventure for up to 3,000 people.
Same idea, different beats on Sunday when Breakin’ Science Sixth Birthday Bash takes over SeOne and delivers the power-packed DJ bill you’d expect of a party that calls itself ‘the ultimate drum ’n’ bass event’. There are three D&B arenas, a ’90s jungle arch to re-re-re-wind in and the Essence of Dub space where the likes of Slaughter Mob, Hatcha, Youngsta and Plastician let the bleeps, beeps and squeaks do the talking.
Dedicated dubsters may be more tempted by Dublime at Fabric on the same night, having had a day to recover from the dubwise rhythm collision that is FWD vs Rinse at The End on Friday.
Feature continues
But drum ’n’ bass heads missing their usual Fabric fix on Friday (when Fabric Live majors on the breaks with the launch of the Plump DJs ‘Headrush’ CD) can max out on every style of D&B as Hospitality storms into Heaven on the same night with Andy C leading the charge. Its last event, in February, was its busiest ever, and with dubstep pressure and soul and funk fans also well looked after, it’s another book-now-or-miss-out affair.
It’s ‘time once again to get your style on in nylon’, for Tayo’s Tracksuit Party. One of the most fun-filled events on the international circuit (Snowbombing, Bestival etc) winds up in west London’s Paradise by way of Kensal Green on Sunday with Tayo and guests like Felix B (Basement Jaxx), Frank ‘Dope’ Tope, DJ Touche and Joe Ransom freestyling with the funk, old-school hip hop, disco and classic house tunes.
And talking of house music… The Size album launch at Ministry of Sound on Saturday boasts a trio of Swedish house mafiosi in the main room. Circo Loco’s return to The End on Sunday will be well worth dressing up and queueing for. And if you’re up for marathon sessions, two of the finest will be Lasermagnetic’s all-night disco-techno live special on Sunday and Redlight Round The Clock, 12 hours of Eurotechno heroes at Club Aquarium from Friday night.
The emphasis on massive weekend sessions means it’s easy to forget that much is happening on bank holiday Monday (apart from never-say-die carry-ons) but if you save your energy for Durrr vs Turbo Recordings (yep, it’s Tiga’s label in the house) at The End or the Cazals’ Album Launch Party at Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen – complete with DJ sets by Kitsuné label bosses Gildas and Masaya and BoomBox’s Jerry Bouthier – you won’t be disappointed.
Alternatively, wait until Wednesday. The best and most dedicated (read: reckless) party animals always have, which is why Nag Nag Nag developed into a living legend nightlife event. It’s the weekly club that kickstarted the whole electroclash scene (remember that?) back in 2002 and 2003, when Nag Nag Nag (with Kash Point and Trash) inspired London clubbers to rediscover their sartorial mojo – in other words, have fun dressing up in DIY outfits to go out and party – and present more live bands in a club context. It may seem normal now… The legend ends on Wednesday, when their resident DJs Johnny Slut, JoJo de Freq and Fil OK will dig out records from throughout the club’s brilliant six-year history. We’ll miss being nagged midweek.
