  • With their preppy severity and Fall-influenced name, These New Puritans could easily be mistaken for the next in the seemingly endless line of post-punk revivalists. This would be slightly unfair. Rather than reanimating the genre’s glory days, TNP seek to move it a step along its evolutionary path.

As the likes of Yeasayer and Vampire Weekend tap into Talking Heads’ mid-’80s journey into African rhythms, These New Puritans also look beyond the tired Joy Division and Gang Of Four templates. The best moments of this album suggest immersion in Public Image Ltd’s mighty ‘Flowers Of Romance’, which drew its formidable power from a combination of muezzin drones and thunderous rhythmic barrages. ‘Beat Pyramid’’s marvellous likes of ‘Infinity Ytinifni’ and ‘Colours’ are worthy updates of this fearless aesthetic.
