Party-minded Brixtonites have been gathering at the late-opening, hard-drinking Dogstar since, it feels, the dawn of time. As with the 1960s, if you remember it, you weren't there at all, but we can reassure you that not much has changed: the big long bar with DJ decks to one side; the informal loungey window seating; the pinball machine; the film poster for Smashing Time (starring Rita Tushingham); the intimate side space; the back room with a pool table and table football. Beyond is an outdoor plot for smokers.
Staff may look like space cadets in dreadlocks, but they're quick, sharp and seen-it-all; ask for a sambuca and it comes to you in an instant. Entertainment is largely DJ-led, a mix of regular nights and one-offs (sometimes thematically tied to what's on that night at the Brixton Academy); beers and wines are standards (Amstel, Grolsch, Corona), but drinking here has always been more about quantity than quality.
