Sammy J
After the opening musical number of Sammy J's latest show the Australian comic explains that the audience shouldn’t feel the need to applaud after each song if they didn’t find it funny. He then goes on to suggest three ways in which the punters, individually or en masse, can express their displeasure for the show in the most inventive, hurtful ways possible. In the hands of a less experienced act this could massively backfire, but luckily for Mr J this is never going to be the case. There’s rarely a dull moment in this gorgeous hour of endearing songs and beautifully told stories. Flipping ideas on their head to glorious effect, the concept that each night’s audience will slowly cease to exist seems not morbid but heartwarming. The opposite is the case for technology, revealing the gloomy side of the digital revolution. This is a beautiful show from an endlessly creative talent, guaranteed to leave a fuzzy feeling inside.
'Sammy J – Skinny Man, Modern World' is at the Underbelly at the Edinburgh Fringe, 21.50.
