  • London, England, 1981,
I’m enjoying life as mum’s tiny baby son,
With Maggie Thatcher, race riots and job losses,
Something was missing from our lives – what was it?
Guess we needed a laugh for what we’d been through,
And not only to laugh, but to think too,
Coz entertainment wasn’t that cool here,
Cabaret nights on the Blackpool Pier no offence!
But the youth needed edge and vibrancy,
Desire not satisfied by Royal Variety,
Til a new wave showed em how to party,
Led by an old ex con: Malcolm Hardee,
His club’d make a comic scared - VERY scared,
If you could play the Tunnel you could make it anywhere,
Malc’d spot the talent on stage, then help ’em,
Alexei Sayle, Rik Mayall, Ben Elton,
Type of guys who’d mention Falklands,
Girls like Jo Brand, French and Saunders,
And then there was the Footlights story,
Bright performing from the likes of Fry and Laurie,
Oxbridge posh kids weren’t the only talent,
I heard the king of alternative was Tony Allen,
And his namesake Keith was the prince,
Changed the face of mainstream ever since,
Let’s take a little time out
    Right now,
Remember when the genre was born, like how,
WE were inspired to grab the mic now,
Go dazzle any live crowd like WOW!
Let’s take a little time out
    Right now,
Remember when the genre was born, like how,
WE were inspired to grab the mic NOW,
Go dazzle any live crowd like, like...
Comedy Store payers saw Comedy Store Players,
Every single day grew comedy more layers,
    Characters in shows were funny,
    Harry’s Loadsamoney,
    Nineties,
    Partridge,
    "Smell my Cheese!"
Vic Reeves catchphrases were used – Chris Morris
Changed the face of the news
    Lee, Herring, Newman and Baddiel
    Made it Rock n Roll
Every young comic then had a proper goal,
You could go so high you’d see heavens,
Hollywood embraced a young Lee Evans,
    Clubs opening
    Every other week
No comedian would ever turn the other cheek,
So many styles now, so many sure shots,
You want a Bill Bailey or a Sean Lock?
It doesn’t matter if you’re picky today,
Russell Brand, Dara O’Briain, Ricky Gervais,
Loved the way he used to make you laugh awkwardly,
Fonejacker, Terry Tibbs – "Talk to me",
So much choice now how would you find out,
What to see? Well you gotta read a Time Out,
They’ve been charting this thing we call Comedy,
Ever since Malcolm got his balls out properly,
    Seasons change
    But the need remains:
    Laughter
    Feeds the brain
    Keeps you sane.
Let’s take a little time out
    Right now,
Remember when the genre was born, like how
WE were inspired to grab the mic now,
Go dazzle any live crowd like WOW!
Let’s take a little time out
    Right now
Remember when the genre was born, like how,
WE were inspired to grab the mic NOW
Go dazzle any live crowd like, like
    WOW!
