A few weeks ago I was asked if I’d like to go on ‘Celebrity Strictly Come Dancing’. It was confirmation that nobody has any idea what I stand for. I hate the whole world of celebs. It doesn’t interest me. That was one of the reasons I had to leave ‘Never Mind the Buzzcocks’. I was getting recognised just for that. I really didn’t want that on my tombstone.
What have I been doing recently? I did ‘As You Like It’ in the West End for four months, which was fulfilling if not exactly a joy. Then I went on to film ITV’s ‘The Last Detective’, on and off, for five months. After saying other people’s words for over a year, it was time I started to use my own again. I’d been doing book readings and poetry clubs and I realised that the stand-up in me wanted to be let loose again. Feature continues
I got pretty tired of stand-up about eight years ago. I felt that I’d gone as far as I could with it. I thought it better to put bigger ideas into novels. At that time I felt stand-up was limited and I wanted to do more with narrative. But I guess it’s like returning to my first love. I’m excited about playing small venues and seeing how far I can take it. My problem is I engage with the audience too much, so half the material doesn’t get out. But I’m very much into the idea each night should be different. I imagine it will take a while before I have a show that I’m really happy with.
The show will be as honest as possible. I’m fascinated by Western ways and how we have far too much choice. It’s making us mentally ill. With all the devastation there is in the world, our problems seem petty. But we think our problems are much more important than theirs. I’m interested in doing a show from a 40-year-old’s point of view. One who still feels like a little boy. I have a love for one-liners, but I’m more interested in letting rip on stage and seeing where the various riffs take me. The best nights out put you through a roller coaster of emotions. I’m happy with my new material, but I want to get to that seamless point where anything can happen.
I want to concentrate on stand-up for the time being. I have the fire in my belly once again. Or it could be middle-age spread. I was toying with the idea of going to Edinburgh. But laziness got the better of me. As a 40-year-old, I like to get home every night and watch telly. I don’t get to see too much comedy these days. But I was impressed by Stewart Lee. I like what Robert Newman is doing. And John Hegley is always a treat. I went to a club recently and I was appalled at what people found funny. And yet, if any comic had edge, they were hissed.
These London shows in July will be about testing the water with new material and winning my long-awaited Time Out Comedy Award. If they’re enjoyable, I plan to do official shows in September. If not, I’ll go and live in Colchester. It’s somewhere people go to die. Fine if you have a connection with the place, but it would be freaky to go there otherwise.
