'Modern Toss', 11pm, C4
The record of humorous British comic books being adapted for TV isn‘t hugely auspicious for Mick Bunnage and Jon Link‘s creation ’Modern Toss‘, which starts a six-part series tonight. Despite several attempts, Viz never successfully made the transfer and Shoreditch Twat never got beyond the pilot stage.
So is there anything in ‘Modern Toss’ to suggest it’ll succeed where these failed? For a start, like several hit C4 shows, it’s made it out of the ‘Comedy Lab’ ghetto, and its animation/live action hybrid is certainly original enough to make a splash. The basic formula is crude but its characters – behaving badly in everyday situations and arbitrarily destroying things – are strangely artfully rendered. There’s Alan, who each week smashes up the property of a nice suburban couple; Mr Tourette, who writes inappropriate signs for a living; and Barney, who wrecks his entire neighbourhood when he can’t find anything on TV except a gardening programme. It’s very nihilistic, there aren’t too many laughs and the premise gets quite samey, but it’s definitely a grower.
Modern Toss begins the 11th July,11.00pm-11.35pm on Channel 4
