  • Modern Toss

  • By Tom Howard

  • The record of humorous British comic books being adapted for TV isn‘t hugely auspicious for Mick Bunnage and Jon Link‘s creation ’Modern Toss‘, which starts a six-part series tonight. Despite several attempts, Viz never successfully made the transfer and Shoreditch Twat never got beyond the pilot stage.

    'Modern Toss', 11pm, C4

  • So is there anything in ‘Modern Toss’ to suggest it’ll succeed where these failed? For a start, like several hit C4 shows, it’s made it out of the ‘Comedy Lab’ ghetto, and its animation/live action hybrid is certainly original enough to make a splash. The basic formula is crude but its characters – behaving badly in everyday situations and arbitrarily destroying things – are strangely artfully rendered. There’s Alan, who each week smashes up the property of a nice suburban couple; Mr Tourette, who writes inappropriate signs for a living; and Barney, who wrecks his entire neighbourhood when he can’t find anything on TV except a gardening programme. It’s very nihilistic, there aren’t too many laughs and the premise gets quite samey, but it’s definitely a grower.

Modern Toss begins the 11th July,11.00pm-11.35pm on Channel 4 Feature continues
