  • Pat Condell: interview

  • By Malcolm Hay

  • He attended half a dozen different schools as the family moved from one south London rented flat to another. ‘We never had any money. My father was a compulsive gambler who worked in a betting shop – not the ideal combination. He ended up in prison for stealing money to gamble with. Shortly afterwards he died of leukaemia.’

Condell ‘fell into comedy’ in the 1980s, after a series of jobs, including six years logging in Canada. ‘In those days some of the nights were wild, particularly at the old Tunnel Club, next to the Blackwall Tunnel, where the audience was a nightmare. I had bottles and glasses thrown at me, and one guy even jumped on stage with a pair of shears and tried to cut the mic lead.’ He performed in the trailblazing Cutting Edge team at the Comedy Store. He regularly notched up 200 to 300 gigs a year around Britain. By the mid-’90s he’d had enough of the travelling and late nights. So he started writing for other people. He turned out a couple of plays. He still did occasional live gigs. ‘But this is the first time I’ve set out to write a show in order to say something, rather than just as a vehicle for stand-up.’ Feature continues

Condell’s not aiming to cause offence. After he’d tried out an early version of the show back in Febrary, a woman came up to tell him she’d enjoyed it. ‘But she thought I’d been unnecessarily coarse. There is a certain amount of bad language. There’s also group sex with a donkey – I might as well own up to this now. But I assured her the show was a lot less coarse than I’d have liked it to be, given the subject matter. So in that sense you could say I’m making an effort not to offend.’

That’s not all. ‘Everyone who comes to “Faith Hope and Sanity” should know in advance exactly what to expect,’ he argues. ‘Especially if they check my website first. So, if anyone’s offended, it’s because they want to be offended, and people like that don’t deserve the time of day.’

It needs saying that Condell respects some forms of belief. ‘I admire anyone who’s genuinely trying to achieve spiritual enlightenment and live a peaceful life. But religious dogma is a barrier to that. The last thing a dogmatist wants is for anyone to be enlightened, any more than a pharmaceutical company wants anybody cured.’ Or, as Condell puts it on his website: ‘Religion disapproves of original thought the way Dracula does sunlight.’

Is he fearful that fundamentalists of one kind or another could take action against the show? ‘The fact that you need to ask the question demonstrates what a sick society we live in. There’s always a risk, I suppose. But I’m not as afraid of fundamentalists as they are of free thought.’ He’s hoping for a positive reaction. ‘I want people to feel that things are being said that are long overdue, and to leave at the end with a smile on their face and a light heart.’

‘Faith Hope and Sanity’ is at the Etcetera Theatre until Sunday.

Religion makes virtue from ignorance. This fact by itself should be warning enough. The Al;chemists of old proclaimed to be able to spin gold from just about any old rubbish that they could lay their hands on. Well, long before the Alchemists jumped on the band wagon there were other more devious Charlatans. Crafted of the same ilk.Promissing not the gleen of Gold to satisfy the greed of Man but ever lasting life.Wow! Now thats what I call an optomistic pitch. How did they think they could get away with it. Well it was thousands of years ago, you know, not long after Man discovered Fire. Well perhaps a bit later than that but like religion this is just guess work, just fantasy so don't hold me to it. All you were asked to do was believe. Don't think, because that would be blasphemy. "I like it" said the conman that should give us a get out of jail card. Any questions we don't like or can't answer, pull out the old blasphemy card."I'm on a roll don't stop me now" You can just imagine the first of the Charlatans,Conmen and Priests exclaiming EUREKE THATS IT! All we gotta do is declare that blind belief is essential if you wan't to be saved. Then invent a higher being that only they the priests can communicate with and only the select few can then benifit from the improved material life here on Earth.Come on you can do it. Come on just try, don't be negative, after all you do wan't to go to heaven, don't you?On a serious note I do believe that religion was sent to lighten Man's burden, to help him get through the tough times here on Earth. Pat Condell makes good that first intention by giving us all a good laugh at ourselves and ofcourse the Arsholes who think that we are all stupid. Keep up the fight Pat. God, if he, she, or it existed would demand it of you.Because even a devine being must have need a good laugh to get him through a shitty week.

Dude, the guy was talking about Zionism which was secular and still is. Oh and so what if someone believes what they want to believe, let it be, im a Muslim revert, if your an athiest or whatever i dont care, im cool with it, you do your own stuff, and i do my own stuff, but dont you dare come out shouting and ridiculing other peoples belief. This isn't a place to vent your anger, do it somewhere, where different jurisdiction applies, and if you dont like the law of the land lobby for it to be amended in the appropriate channels, i dont want time out to fall victim and to be swamped with douche-bag fan boys and girls

Oh, and as for jews, Israel etc, it all stems back to some (very convenient) rubbish claim about god having promised this piece of land to his selected ppl. what a pile of rubbish, and what a pile of dead bodies it's generated over the years too. that's religion for ya! isn't it wonderful :D

I'm definitely all for Pat and his hard hitting comments on things. We need more ppl like him, telling these idiot hardcore religious ppl in their face what most normal, and in particular those of us who see religion is a sign of stupidity, are thinking. It's all ok to preach about this or that person going to hell to be burnt and tortured for ever because they don't recognise some bronze age superstitious myth about an invisible being called god, and it's all ok to demand respect and the right to override this or that rule because of religious beliefs, but when someone stands up for those of us who actually have brains enough to see through all this rubbish and say enough is enough, then ppl go "Oh no, he just wants to stir things up with his militant attitude. Shut him up!!". How pathetic! Until the day someone can give us a proper reason to respect any of this religious rubbish, I have as much respect for your religion as I have for ppl's belief in Santa Claus. He's real too you know!
I do respect your right to say and believe whatever you want, but I for sure have no respect for what you believe in unless you can back it up with some real facts and logic.
Oh, and by the way, look around you and think about what's given you pretty much every little thing (apart from water, air and other natural things of course) you use in your life today. That's right - SCIENCE! Now, science also tells you that most likely (we're talking pretty much 100% here, not 50-50) there is no super being such as your gods. They're in your head, mate, and they're there because you WANT them to be there, not because they actually exist.
Pat, keep up the good work. Maybe one day human kind will stop being so bloody ignorant and embrace logic, reason and science more, and the wonderful enlightenment that comes with it.

Get your facts right Tony A about the jews and their movements and the actual movement of zionism, i agree with Richard on this, and im an theist. Im sure what pat gets, nick griffin also gets the same treatment, if you actively sought out yourself to be an instigator rather than a mediator and or harmonizer, your going to be self imposed into exile which you've just created. Also dont think for a second that it only applies to militant athiests, it goes for thuggish nazis, anger touting minor jihadists and trollers.

Well, Richard, I am a 'militant atheist' and let me tell you that through the cruel lessons of history the Israelis have learned that if they relax for just a milisecond there are plenty of religious maniacs in countries surrounding them that would blow them skyhigh. If I were a Jew, which I am not, I would be just as defensive. Unfortunately there is no alternative. As for "Pat Condell stepping out of his home and embracing it all" have you read the hundreds of ghastly death threats on his website? Pat's only weapons are his intelligent, realistic observations; his opponents seem to prefer foul abuse and suicide belts

I myself am an Agnostic, but you have to understand that Condell is a feckless and grossly inappropriate war monger, his material is used by extremists to de-harmonize the delicate integration of Britain.
Quite frankly, he should stop reading newspaper clippings, subversive commentary and step out of his home and embrace it all, rather than play the grumpy old man, which is quite frankly getting old quick!.
Oh yes and a comment to Robert Stevens about Bill Maher; the gentleman is a self hating Jew, its a part of his character, you can tell by his staunch support for Israel, any militant atheist would tell you that a state such as that shouldn't exist.
You could say that Pat Condell is to militant atheism, what Bill O'Reilly is to the Republicans.
Let me end with this quote.....
"All religions, arts and sciences are branches of the same tree."
    - Albert Einstein

Regarding religion vs science: all you have to do is think about how you came across this comment (probably reading it on your computer). Science is what brought you the enormous body of knowledge that has made possible such complex things as computers. The very same body of knowledge is telling us that gods, heaven and hell, jesus walking on water etc etc is nothing but pure fantasy and bronze age myths. What concrete evidence has religion and beliefs brought? Nothing. So, it's your choice - either you realise the beauty of science and enjoy the ride, OR you believe in what religious books tell you, in which case you also have to tell yourself that your mobile phone doesn't work, it doesn't even exist, because science is wrong! Pretty obvious which way to go if you are interested in the truth, and which way to go if you like to live a lie.
    Cheers! :)

The people who disagree with pat do so because they will have to admit that loved ones who've passed away will never be seen again. religion is all they have to cling on to.It's understandable they think of an afterlife and force themselves into believing in God. However....think of the talking snake...it's stupid...isn't it...as is the rest of the bible and other religious books.Think of peasant men sitting around a campfire in the desert telling each other tales!....search for Mormons..read about them...absolute drivel...you won't believe what they believe..their whole doctrine is the product of a twisted mind. The person who kicked it all off was well known for telling the most incredible tall stories..he believed that jesus visited North America and also that their underwear is magic and will potect them...honest...I thought it was a Monty python sketch...you think I'm Kidding...search and read....it's a bit frightening really to think that otherwise normal people can be hypnotised by these 'Damaged' people and devote their whole lives to a complete load of nonesense.....There should be a law against it like some of the other crazy cults that rob peoples minds..

Pat Condell himself is 'long overdue'. WHY did I have to become 72 years old before his YouTube videos appeared!?!? THE most rational voice in public life today!!!
It is absolutely essential that Pat appear with Bill Maher ASAP!

I would like to meet Pat one day and shake his hand. He brilliantly puts into words exactly how I have felt about religion for a long time now, and I fully agree when he says "if a persons personal beliefs help them through life, great." he makes it clear that he has no problem with that. Its the people who take it to the exteme and shape their lives, and try to make others shape their lives around religion and take offence at anyone who might disagree.

How about Pat as a new Home Secretary?

Refused to attend a christening the other day...got it in the neck but my conscience is clear. To bless a pair of 6 month-old twins in the name of a god is, frankly, child-abuse. I understand there is now an organization or, at least, a movement to establish in churches a facility for enlightened adults to be 'de-baptised'...what a good idea.

Pat Condell is a NECESSITY for all decent people.
As for the indecent ones -- fascists, Bush Republicans, christians, TV preachers, ad nauseum -- well, their real necessity is piano wire, around their ignorant, ruinous necks!
At this point (here in the american south -- sorry to bring up the repulsive subject), there would be no escape from the religious insanity, except for Pat Condell.
"Islam is not the problem. Religion is the problem." - Pat Condell
As MY own personal Sunday ritual (no clothing comparison required!), I watch all of the Pat Condell videos which confirms my belief in decency, sanity and ... well, you know, all of the things that Mr. Condell stands for.

Could it be arranged tha pat Condell could have a television debate with Shirley phelps broadcast here and in America...it would be fabulous to watch..failing that...would any Muslim ,Christian or Jewish spokesperson dare to face Pat in open debate on TV....I think not..and why not?....well....would you throw yourself into a paper shredder???
