Age 40 (or 32 according to FHM).
Awards Chortle Best Breakthrough 2005, Time Out Comic and Best Show of the Year 2008, Chortle Best Headliner and Comics’ Comic 2009.
Biggest gig played to date ‘Probably the “Just for Laughs” comedy festival in Montreal (about 4,000), but on my own tour, I finished up with two nights at Cardiff’s Wales Millenium Centre – which holds about 1,800. Eighteen hundred Welsh people is far scarier than 4,000 North Americans. The Royal Variety Performance was probably the biggest in terms of TV profile and potential embarrassment.’
Describe yourself in no more than 50 words ‘Has he been on “Mock the Week”? Yeah, I think so… Wasn’t he on that thing with Prince Charles where he took the piss out of them? Yeah, think it was him… He’s alright, him.’
Best known for ‘Among stand-ups, probably being miserable; among promoters, probably being miserable; among friends and family, again, miserable; among the general public, it’s probably the bloke in the Welsh Tourist Board adverts who had a pop at Prince Charles on the Royal Variety Performance.’
Nicest thing a reviewer has said about you ‘Erm…’
Worst things a reviewer has said about you ‘In Edinburgh, Fest Magazine said: “Gilbert mistakes the art of surreal comedy for talking complete bollocks and dies on his arse.” That certainly gave me a lift in my preparation for the biggest gig of my fledgling career (the BBC New Comedy Awards) a few days later.’
    Comedy influences
‘I guess it’ll sound good if I say people who other people like. So my main influences were Eddie Izzard and Richard Pryor, oh and of course Bernard Manning, Jim Davidson and Jethro, Bill Hicks, Harry Hill, Rod Hull, Morecambe & Wise, and Little & Large, oh and Kenneth Williams and Joan Rivers.’
Favourite joke ‘Tim Vine’s “half a horse” joke. I can’t do it justice here; it needs to be accompanied by Tim’s stupid face, his irresistible joy in telling it and 200 other jokes either side of it, some of which are genius, some of which are utter shit.’

    Jack Whitehall

Age 20. ‘Born on 7/7/88 which means I really hate radical Islam!’
Awards Amused Moose New Act of the Year.
Biggest gig played to date ‘Teenage Cancer Trust, Royal Albert Hall.’
Describe yourself in no more than 50 words ‘A comic who’s constantly being prefixed with the word “young”, which means, what with the linear temporal nature of existence, in about six years, I’m fucked. I’ll need a new gimmick. Maybe I’ll black up.’
Best known for ‘Hosting ‘ “Big Brother’s Big Mouth”. ’
Nicest thing a reviewer has said about you ‘All the lovely things in Time Out. An unhinged fan on the internet once said she’d take a bullet for me. Heat once called me “cute” – the accolade all comics strive for. Take that, Lenny Bruce!’
Worst things a reviewer has said about you ‘A woman once wrote she’d rather stick needles in her eyes than watch me, which is a little harsh. Unless she’s a heroin addict looking for an entry point, in which case I’ll take it as a compliment.’
Comedy influences ‘Rhod Gilbert, Sarah Millican, George Ryegold and the other one… Actually, I hate Deacon! We’re like Coe and Ovett, or Wenger and Ferguson.’
Favourite joke ‘Sean Meo: “If you leave a dog locked in a car on a hot day it will die in about half an hour – if you leave the heating on you can get that down to about ten minutes!” ’

    Sarah Millican

Age 33. ‘Thirties are the best.’
Awards ‘The if.comedy Best Newcomer 2008. Are GCSEs prizes? Prizes for not having friends but liking homework.’
Biggest gig played to date ‘ “Secret Policeman’s Ball”. Gok Wan told me I was funny. I wanted to thank him for allowing me to have a belly but, ironically, didn’t have the guts.’
Describe yourself in no more than 50 words ‘Today I’m raping Topshop. I recently sang “Part Time Lover” in front of supportive friends. My family tell strangers, “We’re all funny, it’s just she’s the only one who gets paid.” ’
Best known for ‘In comedy – looks like a primary school teacher with the mouth of a biker. With friends and family – is always a little bit late.’
Nicest thing a reviewer has said about you ‘ “With the look of Deidre Barlow in her prime.” In her prime. Ken Barlow and Mike Baldwin fought over her when she was In her prime. I am clearly a fox.’
Worst things a reviewer has said about you ‘ “With the look of Deirdre Barlow in her prime.” I am crying right now.’
Comedy influences ‘At the Melbourne Comedy Festival I saw a barrage of hilarious women: Janeane Garofalo, Judith Lucy, Hannah Gadsby, Celia Pacquola and Felicity Ward (whose show clashed with mine but was hilarious over a curry)..’
Favourite joke ‘I would never put someone else’s joke in print but the punchline of my favourite pub joke is “all right, Batman”.’

    Tom Deacon

Awards ‘Chortle Student Comedian of the year, a goldfish at the funfair.’
Biggest gig played to date ‘Lyric Theatre, Frank Skinner’s Credit Crunch Cabaret – 915 seats.’
Describe yourself in no more than 50 words ‘Genuine guy. Likes long walks, fine dining and cinema. Tells funny jokes now and again. NS, GSOH, WLTM similar. I once won a goldfish at the funfair!’
Best known for ‘Winning a goldfish at the funfair.’
Nicest thing a reviewer has said about you ‘The Sunday Times: “With looks, confidence, charm and great material. Expect other comics to lynch him.” ’
Worst thing a reviewer has said about you ‘The Sunday Times: “Expect other comics to lynch him.” ’
Comedy influences ‘Reginald D Hunter, Craig Campbell.’
    Favourite joke ‘Boris Johnson.’

    George Ryegold

Awards ‘Stubbington Study Centre Orienteering Competition. First prize: a packet of blackcurrant Chewits, devoured with relish.’
Biggest gig played to date ‘Saturday late show at The Comedy Store. Splendid.’
Describe yourself in no more than 50 words ‘Pioneering physician and polymath with a bent for the well-turned simile.’
Best known for ‘Boldly probing the boundaries of medical ethics.’
Nicest thing a reviewer has said about you ‘Channel 4: “The man who made me cry… my eyes were watering for all the right reasons.” ’
Worst thing a reviewer has said about you ‘Nick Ewans: “Everyone has been thoroughly pleasant thus far, so here’s another of my favourites: ‘It’s like seeing a rat in the street. You’re repulsed by it, but you can’t help staring at it.’ ” ’
Comedy influences ‘Ronnie Barker, Leonard Rossiter, Harry Hill, Doug Stanhope.’
Favourite joke ‘Harry Hill: “Name a bird, sir, name a bird. Swan? It’s already taken, sir. Swan!” ’
