This 52-year-old festival will take on a new lease of life in 2014 with the addition of an inflatable pop-up stage in the shape of a ten-metre tall bowler hat. The design may represent London's more traditional fashions, but the line-up has plenty to keep a modern audience entertained, including comedy from the likes of Jenny Eclair and Richard Herring, showtunes from 'Judy & Liza' and 'Julie Madly Deeply', and kids shows 'Dogs Don't do Ballet' and 'Misunderstood Monsters'. Elsewhere the festival line-up includes a series of performances from Korean artists, a trio of jazz concerts with incredible views, Simon Callow's theatrical exploration of Beethoven and more than 100 free events. The Festival Children's Parade on June 27 celebrates classic kids' stories and ends with a performance from the cast of 'Matilda the Musical' on the West Steps of St Paul's (1.30pm). See the City of London Festival website for the full line-up and to book tickets. If you don't find something that tempts you we'll eat our hat.
