Matthew Bourne's take on the Scissorhands story stays close to Tim Burton's film – minus Johnny Depp of course. It's great fun and Bourne cleverly conjures up the right mix of kitsch Americana and fairytale fantasy, with lively set-pieces and amusing (if one-dimensional) characters. What's missing is the enchanting magical realism of the celluloid version, replaced by a tone that veers more towards pantomime instead.
