Michael Keegan-Dolan's Fabulous Beast Dance Theatre perform a new interpretation of 'The Rite of Spring' in a double bill with the Bartok opera 'Duke Bluebeard's Castle', directed by Daniel Kramer. Keegan-Dolan enforces Stravinsky's potent rhythms with the pounding feet of a stageful of men, but the macho mob culture is upturned by 'Chosen One' Daphne Strothmann, who, rather than dancing to her death, brings startling life to a bleak town. Kramer's take on 'Bluebeard' is a disturbing one, with the feel of a twisted thriller, but both pieces endeavour to show that these old stories based in myth aren't just outdated relics but distressingly pertinent today.
