The best places in London for gay girls to drink and dance

© Stefan Klenke

London's original and only full-time lesbian venue, Soho’s Candy Bar, ruled the roost from 1996 until its closure in 2008. Now under new management, it’s still a go-to spot for the under-20s.

There are, however, plenty of popular lesbian watering holes, where you can pick up flyers for club nights. Girls Go Down, hidden away in the basement of G-A-Y, still pumps out chart music every night for a studenty crowd, and up in Stoke Newington, a prominent lesbian stomping ground, Oak Bar is a favourite for north London riot grrrls.

An update to this article. Bijou is no longer at Tart Bar, it is at Rudd (previously called Cos Bar). Rumours has been monthly but is moving to more ad hoc. Dolly Mixtures has been replaced by Chick Habit at Candy Bar. The Oak Bar has closed down, and Candy will be closing in the new year. A new lesbian venue is to open in Soho in early January. Details are not yet available. The lesbian scene changes monthly with new events popping up, and events moving or ceasing to run. A full events calendar is housed on Planet London's website which lists all of the events for lesbian and bi women. This is a good place to start for finding what is currently on in London.
