Ironmonger Row Baths

Originally opened as a wash house in 1931, the public centre recently underwent a £16.5 million restoration project, which included giving the Turkish hammam in the basement (now operated by Spa London) a lavish facelift. Its trio of hot rooms, two saunas, two steam rooms and an ice-cold plunge pool now feel incongruously luxurious given the cost of a three-hour session here (from £8.75), and the spa’s menu of signature and Elemis beauty treatments are almost absurdly affordable. The chasm between palatial looks and leisure centre prices continues throughout. A state-of-the-art gym has been installed (we love the spinning bikes facing an anytime DVD tutorial), and the five-lane pool has been spruced up: apparently 200 man-hours were spent sanding down and varnishing its 1930s wooden gallery – and it shows. What’s been preserved in spite of the primping, however, is a sense of the venue’s place in local history.

Central YMCA

A perennial favourite with those working in the West End due to low membership rates, a fully equipped Pilates studio, large cardio theatre and up-to-date resistance training equipment. It’s not glamorous but that’s not the point here; instead it provides every possible type of workout and activity including climbing, trampolining and volleyball, taught to a very high standard (YMCA Fitness Industry Training is an industry leader and many of its graduates instruct here). A good 25-metre pool is divided for lane swimming; there’s also a chapel, therapies and a decent café to boot.

Serpentine Lido

Early mornings and the winter months are the preserve of the Serpentine Swimming Club, but from May to September there’s a warm welcome for everyone in this section of the Serpentine lake – although the water is not heated. It’s not chlorinated either, a boon for swimmers who prefer to avoid the stuff, as well as to the wildlife (you may find yourself sharing a dip with the local ducks and swans). The gated family area with a (chlorinated) paddling pool, sandpit and swings means parents can relax while their children play. There's a private sunbathing area and sun loungers for hire and a kiosk within the lido grounds makes it possible to order from the popular Lido Café next door.

Oasis Sports Centre

A 27.5m expanse of blue, the outdoor pool at the Oasis in Covent Garden is a central London revelation to the uninitiated. Once you’ve discovered the open-air heated pool, sun terrace and adjacent indoor pool you’ll be hooked, just like everyone else who’s in on the secret. The Oasis is so popular at hot summer weekends and at peak times that getting any serious swimming done is difficult – best go with the modest aim of splashing about to cool down. The outdoor parts were refurbished in 2011, with new steps to the sunbathing terrace, where there are separate areas for adults and families, and decking beside the café which serves smoothies and ice creams. Swimming is free for Camden residents aged 55 and over between 9am and noon Monday to Friday.

Golden Lane Leisure Centre

This handsome rooftop swimming pool might be on the shortish side at 20 metres but its uplifting, light-filled surroundings more than make up for it. The pool offers fitness sessions and swimming classes. Part of the Fusion Leisure group, there's also a high-tech gym and outdoor courts for tennis and netball. Once you've done a few lengths, the club also offers a good range of martial arts classes including Karate, Tae Kwon Do and Judo. A swim will set you back £8, so if you live of work nearby membership is a much more cost-effective option.

  • Hi everyone, I'm trying to find where the best indoor waterpark / water slide rides are in and around London. Everytime I search the only "fun" water activity place that comes up is Aqua Splash in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire. Can anyone help? Surely there has got to be an indoor waterpark in London! Many thanks!

  • Hi Everyone, I am currently looking for a decent (which means CLEAN swimming pool meeting the continental standards (changing rooms outside the main hall, shallow pool through which you have to walk before entering the main hall to get rid off anything that lives on your feet, clean toilets and showers, swimming- friendly chlorine levels). The reason I am asking for some advice is that I was swimming in east Dulwich (where I live st the moment) but had to stop as the water is just dirty and I ended up with a massive sinusitis after each swim, which has not happened before. Peckham swimming pool is much cleaner, but it is seriously overcrowded and swimming there is just difficult. I would be truly upset if I had to give up swimming as it cost me too much effort to learn it and I really enjoy it! I guess I could commute twice a week somewhere within zones 1-2, if I really liked it there. anyway, I would be grateful for any suggestions: dustinmyveins@hotmail.com

  • I hesitate to mention it (in case everyone goes there) but Seymour Leisure centre is very well run these days. Everyone gets a polite reminder to shower before swimming and the wet-side changing rooms are about to be re-opened following refurbishment. It's 33.3yds long (about 30.5 metres) there is natural light and the water is consistently clean. I pay £28 per month for unlimited swimming. I wish I lived in town to be able to use it even more often than I do! This is the small one - the main pool (44 yards) has been covered over as a Sports Hall since most people can remember.

  • I don't buy TO anymore as the regurgitated articles and lists are often out of date. Occasionally check online and funnily enough, it still has the North - Muswell Hill via Camden to Soho - bias with a tokenistic fling to Peckham (where one writer obviously lives, how very daring). Brockwell Lido is shut in the winter despite the listing, Ironmonger Baths is revoltingly dirty and of course they haven't stepped foot in there recently, lazy TO's "writers" just check the last article and put that in. TO can only sustain itself on newcomers to the capital - of which of course there are hundreds every day so guess it is smug and complacent cos of that.

  • Finchley Lido, don't know what it was like but nowadays it has a lane pool, a fun pool which is like a beach (you walk in and it gradually gets deeper), a small jacuzzi and a sauna. The changing rooms are poor, there are no hairdryers except one in the toilet where there is hardly any space and it smells. They leave the garden doors open all the time and the draught is very unpleasant for swimmers or people in changing rooms. The floors are always wet - never seen anyone come to sweep them. As for cafe, it is not worth a visit, first of all ALL seats are wet and they are sponge seats, not just plastic that you can wipe dry - whoever thought of that?!! There is a small swimming pool outside which operates in high summer but basically do not except too much so you won't be disappointed. For an unbeatable swimming pool, try Potters Bar Furzehill Centre. Bit of a distance but well worth your time and money.

  • Gurnell Leisure Centre Swimming Pool has a reputation for verrucas... every childI have ever met, who has been there has got one or several verrucas in the hands of feet... And some of the staff have actually encouraged people to pass urine directly in there, as "everybody does it anyway".. also no hourly checks of chlorine levels at all! What a waste of facilities!

  • I have seen the advert to the Turkish bath, Ironmonger Row Baths and was really interested with the information disclosed there. I decided to try it this Saturday 06th of September. I was completely shocked with the place. The smell was horrible from the moment we stepped in the lockers room. I could not understand how you can say in your website that this is one of the top 5 places in London. It might have been long time ago, but now all we could see was a filthy and stinky place. I am sorry if it sounds bad, but I was expecting at least hygienic place. There are not even shower gels in the only two showers available. The resting areas are dreadful. This place shouldn't even be mentioned anywhere as a recommendation, it damages any one's reputation. This info is about the Turkish baths only. We have not used any other facilities in that centre. After all we just wanted to leave the place as soon as possible!
