Where to commune with the capital's creatures

  • Alexandra Palace Ice Rink

    Alexandra Palace Way, N22 7AY

    All Pally's lofty and recently refurbished indoor skating arena is open year-round for general skating sessions, figure skating classes, ice hockey training, children's sessions and parties. Ccourses for children aged from five to 15 are available on Saturday mornings and early on weekday evenings. Friday and Saturday evenings are Disco Nights, and there's late opening on Sunday too, when more chilled out tunes provide the soundtrack for languid loops around the ice.

  • Lee Valley Ice Centre

    Lea Bridge Rd, E10 7QL

    The disco nights are a big hit at this modern, well-maintained and comparatively warm ice rink. Other plus points are the fact that it's never too busy, and the ice rink is a good size. Skating lessons are also offered.

  • Michael Sobell Leisure Centre

    Hornsey Rd, N7 7NY

    This small ice rink was closed at the time of writing, as contractors tried to solve a major fault with the rink. Check with the centre for details of its reopening date. The rink usually hosts well-attended after-school sessions and six-week courses for children. Anyone over four is welcome; children can have ice-skating birthday parties here too, with all the necessary equipment provided. The leisure centre also offers ice hockey sessions for the over-sixes.

  • Queens Ice and Bowl

    17 Queensway, London, W2 4QP

    Beginners and families are well looked after at this ice rink, which holds legendary disco nights on Fridays and Saturdays. Children's lessons cost £65 for a six-week course. Hot Belgian waffles in the café are a big hit with kids. There's also a 12-lane tenpin bowling centre.

  • Streatham Ice Arena

    386 Streatham High Rd, London, SW16 6HT

    Sadly this popular venue is set to close for good on December 18 2011. Despite some bad press, the ice arena – which celebrated its 80 anniversary this year – has been an institution for local ice hockey teams, ice dancers and children, and locals are worried Streatham will ‘be dead’ once it’s gone. It is set to be replaced by the Streatham Hub, which will house a Tesco superstore, a new state of the art ice rink and a 25 lane swimming pool. Click here for info on the last skate.
