He may be a celeb and TV favourite, but there's nothing intimidating about Andrew Barton's eponymous salon - his Covent Garden venue is his friendly 'home away from home', with stylists and clients alike gabbing away to each other over tea and biscuits in a relaxed setting, complete with strokeable flock wallpaper puppies. Think of Atherton Cox as the Jil Sander of hairdressers: beautiful cuts delivered without fuss. It was founded nearly a decade ago by Lisa Atherton and Paul Cox, and the team is now nearly 40-strong, catering predominantly for glamorous thirtysomething Marylebone professionals and yummy mummies. For those who care about what is going into and on to their bodies, the Aveda Institute on High Holborn is hard to beat. One of the original purveyors of natural hair and skin products, the brand continues to deliver quality treatments at this vast, airy hair and beauty spa. Time Out has long been a fan of the salon, not only for its fabulous non-aggressive colour and great cuts, but the serene manicure and pedicure booths, tucked away at the back. See more details
You may feel a little self-conscious approaching the rather grand Bourdon House, home to luxury brand Alfred Dunhill’s flagship store, but a calm, unpretentious welcome makes you feel as though you’re a member of an exclusive men’s club (which, incidentally, is just what occupies the other half of the building). For no-nonsense blow-dries, great colour and cuts in bright, comfortable surroundings, Charles Worthington is your man. We have long frequented the Percy Street outlet for lunchtime blow-dries (from £36) and can’t fault the customer service – a bowl of nuts and glass of bubbly is always offered within seconds of sitting down (you can have unlimited top-ups for a £2 charge. The Conduit Street flagship of Daniel Hersheson has been offering great blow-dries and cuts since it opened in in the early 1990s. The clientele range from Vogue staffers, who work just over the road, to brass-buttoned Mayfair inhabitants and a raft of out-of-towners who travel in for the superior services. See more details
You can tell a fair bit about a salon from the calibre of towel on offer. At this swish Marylebone hairdressers they’re as thick as duvets and the colour of caramel highlights. See more details
Miss Betty and Mr Ducktail are London’s self-proclaimed ‘rock ‘n’ roll motherkutters’ – rockabilly hair experts who’ll coiffeur you back to the ’50s. Their small salon in Kingly Court offers a full menu of services for women – particularly colour treatments and brilliant, gravity-defying up-dos – but there’s just one coveted chair for men, where Mr Ducktail whips up pompadour quiffs with clippers, scissors and a switchblade. With its bright pops of colour, bold, graphic branding and tattooed lady (in-house barber Hayley Betts), Joe & Co is a contemporary barbershop that eschews the stuffy wood panels and badger brushes of traditional-looking male salons. See more details
Jo Hansford has carved a niche for herself in hair colour. She is the first person many celebs turn to when they are thinking about changing from buttercup to vanilla (including Angelina Jolie and, bizarrely, Tim Henman). See more details
'Having previously always worked for other people, we've really paid attention to all the things that used to niggle at us!' says Stewart Payne, co-founder and manager of this 'East-Meets-West London' salon. Business partner, Ricky Lee Jones, co-founder and Master Stylist who trained at the likes of Trevor Sorbie and the nearby Taylor & Taylor, and the addition of a few 'little wow factors' borrowed from more exclusive establishments is what really sets this homely-feeling salon apart from its mid-range competitors. Despite a recent makeover, Michaeljohn remains the ultimate old-school Mayfair salon catering for royalty (currently patronised by Princess Beatrice), fashion editors (yup, Anna Wintour gets her fringe cut here by Charlie Chan), and the Hollywood set (from Cameron Diaz to Drew Barrymore). With a full grooming package, from wet shaves, manicures and in-chair treatments to simple cuts and clever restyles, the décor may be old but consistent, high quality service is relaxed and contemporary. See more details
For the original Toni & Guy experience, visit the Sloane Square salon. It’s been here for 30 years and harks back to the family roots of this global superbrand, and boasts a fiercely loyal clientele. See more details
‘From catwalk to the kerb’ is Windle & Moodie’s mantra, and few are more qualified to do so. Following a revamp last year, its Covent Garden salon features 2,500 square feet of styling space, plastered with shots of its greatest cuts – from Kate Moss hair-swishing in Vogue to Gwyneth Paltrow’s enviable choppy bob. I had my hair cut at Jo and Cass Preston and it was horrifying. This salon meant to be a 5star but it felt more like 1star. The staff was impolite, rude and tret me like I was just anybody off the street. I would never recommend this salon to any body!
Jubilee Hair Salon
28 Denmark Street, Covent Garden WC2H 8NP (Nearest Tube is Tottenham Court Road)
I must have been one of the countless women unhappy with my unruly hair that had to be constantly styled every morning with the mere suggestion of rain making it frizzy and uncontrolable.
Not any more ! I went for a Yuko Hair straightening treatment at Jubilee Hair salon.
Result: Beautiful straight frizz free hair to last up to six months
Relaxed, uber chic salon, exceptional stylists, kool lounge style music. The corner location benefited with floor to ceiling windows allowing you to watch the world go by, free wifi and wonderful lavazza coffee served ......
Above all the modest treatment price, given the Central London location was the biggest bonus.
I will not be changing my hairdresser in a hurry !
Francesco Picardi Hairdressing in Pitfield Street is actually in Shoreditch.
Having read some reviews about them i went for a compleate makeover from their services and i was very impressed. Francesco as to offer a welth of experience for his customers!
Went there the other day based on the ratings and comments here, and I was very pleased! Sofie was lovely, and just the kind of hairdresser I need. I had very long hair (almost touching my bum), and I needed to get a real hairstyle. Sofie proposed two alternatives after hearing me out, and explained which she thought would suit me best, which was just what I needed. I want a nice hairstyle, but I had no idea really what would suit me, but while She had her own ideas, she still listened to my concerns as I was a bit cowardous in the beginning, but I'm more than happy with my new hairstyle and I can only recommend this salon to anyone and everyone!
VIP hair nail studio is the best salon in london. When Anne styles your hair you know you get the best, she love her work. vip hair studio is a very calm relax salon, and Ann is a very quiet, calm and nice person we all love vip hair studio.
Hari's on kings road is the best! My colourist and stylist are amazing and so friendly. Its like getting your hair cut by good friends at a party while you are sipping on a cocktail :D
BlueTit, Stoke Newington High Street NEEDS to be on this this. Just had my hair cut there on Friday by Matt (the guy with the comfy beard) for a night out at the Zetter Townhouse, and on the evening got told that I looked like Anna Karina because of my cut. What a complement! I usually hate going to the hairdressers. I was almost the only girl in a barber shop (it's not, but alot of guys were having their hair cut at the same time as me) and I couldn't have felt more chic. Thanks guys! I'll definitely be back again.
You've managed to miss almost all of the main salons on Streatham High Road! Charles Carter - good quality Black/European salon (a pretty rare mix, actually), Cutting Room (quite funky styles for a young/studenty clientele), and allabouthair - more upmarket salon, headed by a (seriously good) ex-Sassoon stylist - run regular deals on their website.
I bought a voucher from G....pon for £49 high lights, wash and cut in one of the biggest salon in the UK, I had a terrible experience ever, at the end I paid about £80, because my hair requires more tubes of colour and I'm forced to have a treatment. Is a big mistake if you want to try to spend less for your look, the hairdresser wont care about you so much because all they know is you've been paid and they will try to get more from you and just all. is your look and please think twice! I'm getting my hair fix in one of the reviews, wish me luck!!
I love Brooks and Brooks in Holborn - no fuus, no divas just great hair and no nonsense
Rockets on hackney road are great, and do a basic beard trim as well !
This page has been changed, I follow some awesome salons but they weren't on the list anymore. I go different hair salons everytime because I'm not fussy with my hair, and I'm always happy with the timeout recommendations apart from 2 that I found it average and pricy but they are still on the list :S not sure where to go now, maybe is time to stick with the one I like, guys, any suggestions?
Rocket barber shop on hackney road! They have a Morris minor juke box and cuts are great! How did this get missed out?
I agree with Tamara I found Foster London on Time Out months ago thank god.
Foster London wasnt on the board?? Its been my Salon of choice for the past year since it opened.. Relaxed with attentive staff.. good music and nice cakes.. my hair always looks great and I get commented.. Thanks Nadia & Drew!
After reading some reviews, I picked ESHK, Jay was fully booked and I had my hair cut with a very friendly male hairdresser(with a french accent), I am very pleased with the cut and the service, good recommendation.
I think u guy are great,am hopin 4 a day 2join u guys,because am also a stylist.

i've been getting my hair cut by Jay from ESHK in Hoxton for over a year now. she's very friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. i've yet to be disappointed. =)
Malishi by London Bridge is excellent as are their prices
The Cut Shop on Charing Cross Rd is London's best kept hairdressing secret! Run by more of an Artist than a Hairdresser. The lady that cuts your hair is a rare talent. I walk out looking great rather than looking for another hairdresser! The prices are also extremely affordable, and you don't usually need to make an appointment.
5 Stars

Francesco Picardi Hairdressing in Pitfield Street should be on this list.
Francesco’s work chas been published in Estetica, Studio, Beauty, The Independent, Pop Magazine, GQ Magazine and reportage from numerous style shoots - according to his website.
As a customer who regularly visits the salon I would recommnend to anyone who wants a new style that suits their face.
Blue Tit in dalston is the best hair salon I have ever been to . session stylists made sure my hair is trendy, free fruit smoothie with vodka in the garden . Love the guys there x
I was looking for a change for my fine hair. I wanted something modern and hip without going overboard. Jay at ESHK salon was fantastic! She gave me a haircut that I loved and can do myself. My hair looks thicker, shinier, and way sexier now!!!! Thanks Jay! Will see you in about 8 weeks!
There's great hairdressers in Islington, North London (Amwell Street) called.... THE HAIRDRESSERS. Two ex-Vidal Sassoon hairdressers started it so you know you're in good hands. It's a fab family atmosphere with it being a favourite of all the locals. Funky decor throughout and a great music selection... don't forget to scratch your message into the table while you wait and take a cookie.
I got my digital perm done at http://www.fourmirrors.co.uk/
Han, the owner and senior hairdresser, after working at tony and guy for almost a decade started his own salon last year. I was really nervous about the perm since my hair was really long, straight and heavy! He did a great job and his attitude is very welcoming! Please add fourmirrors to your list!
Headonizm in Pimlico is where I've had my haircut for the past few years. £29 for a wash, cut and blow dry. Bargain!
Sanrizz at Knightsbridge is the best - my hairdresser is so hot, Robert.
Sarah at Wedge on Caladonian Road is by far the best for cuts that I've had in London. She is a master.
Daniel Mikhael Haute Coiffure, Unisex art deco salon with top fashion stylists that really know how to cut, colour and style. Relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff and glam cool interiors.
Armstrong Cuthbert in Chiswick is the best antidote to all those high street chains. A relaxed, contemporary setting right on the High Road, RedKen trained hair professionals and a loyal clientele reflecting 25years of excellence.
