Danny Wallace first entered the public eye as co-author of ‘Are You Dave Gorman?’. He’s since written several books including ‘Join Me’, ‘Friends Like These’ and ‘Yes Man’, which was made into a feature film starring Jim Carrey. He’s also a regular columnist for Shortlist magazine and a radio presenter on BBC 6Music and XFM.
High-concept, silly, scary and very funny, with some killer lines from a bunch of comedy heroes at the top of their game. Murray! Aykroyd! Ramis! Moranis! Reitman! I want to watch ‘Ghostbusters’ again even now.
Glen Walton is one third of Australian comedy/music/junkyard-theatre group The Suitcase Royale.
‘I know a little German... he's sitting over there’.
David is a well-established stand-up and storyteller on the comedy circuit. See David Ward live.
Every time I watch ‘Airplane!’ there’s a new joke. Hilarious from first minute to last. Well written slapstick comedy at its best. A style I couldn’t write or perform in but love to watch. Would love them to make a third film with people like Harry Hill and Tim Vine in it.
Well-spoken stand-up Andrew Watts reached the finals of new act competitons So You Think You’re Funny?, Amused Moose Laugh Off and Laughing Horse. He regularly plays comedy clubs across the UK. See Andrew Watts live.
I think ‘There's Something About Mary’ is massively underrated. Just because it has a few dollops of (hilarious!) gross-out slapstick, people ignore the fact that it's a brilliantly structured comedy (e.g. the two balancing scenes with Magda's dog on two different drugs) with a surprising amount to say about the nature of love.
Multi-talented US comic Reggie Watts improvises musical sets, looping his voice to create shows and songs that are never the same twice. He was handpicked by Conan O’Brien to support him on tour and his debut CD/DVD, ‘Why $#!+ So Crazy?’, is available on Comedy Central Records.
I chose ‘Not Another Teen Movie’ because it combines my love of teen movies and ridiculous ‘Airplane!’-style humour. The performances and writing are top notch and it's full of subtle bits you can discover over and over upon several watchings.
Jack Whitehall won the Amused Moose Laugh Off award at the age of 19 and has since become a regular fixture on TV, presenting ‘Big Brother’s Big Mouth’, being a regular comic on ‘Stand Up for the Week’ and guesting on ‘Live at the Apollo’, ‘Mock the Week’ and ‘Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow’. Basically, any TV comedy show – Whitehall’s done it.
Jason John Whitehead is a London-based Canadian stand-up who has been on the circuit for the past 12 years. He’s a regular at comedy festivals in Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, the UK, the Netherlands and his home country of Canada. See Jason John Whitehead live.
If ‘Groundhog Day’ has cracked your annual Christmas must-watch list then you really need to add ‘Elf’. Mandatory annual watching in the Whitehead household. Will Ferrell is at his best and this is one of the most imaginative feelgood comedies of the decade.
Jodie Whittaker has been a glowing presence in films ranging from septuagenarian romp ‘Venus’ to ‘St Trinian’s’, ‘Attack the Block’ and the soon-to-be-released romantic drama ‘One Day’.

Stand-up Catie Wilkins took her first solo show, ‘A Chip Off the Odd Block’, to the Edinburgh Fringe in 2011. She currently has a children’s book under submission. See Catie Wilkins live.
‘The Hudsucker Proxy’ is my favourite Coen brothers film: fantastic story about a man who starts from nothing then has it all but gets tricked, chewed up and spat out – but finds true love. My favourite scene is his induction to the mail room: excellent satire of how training in all my previous jobs has felt.
Ben Williams is the Comedy Editor of Time Out. He also helps programme Time Out Live's comedy events and founded the Long Paws Comedy Club – an occasional comedy night in Wells, Somerset which he started in 2005.
‘I feel some explanation is needed. Firstly, ‘Best in Show’ appears higher in the list than ‘Spinal Tap’ for one reason: it features more Fred Willard. ‘Mean Girls’ is an overlooked comedy gem with a super-sharp script by Tina Fey. And ‘Robin Hood: Men in Tights’ certainly isn't the best film ever made (it isn't even Mel Brooks’ best) but, when I first saw it aged five, it introduced me to Brooks and I'm certain I still quote at least one line from it every single day.
Ben Wilson is one quarter of slick sketch quartet, and Edinburgh Comedy Award nominees, Idiots of Ants.
Like most of the films on my list, I used to watch ‘Groundhog Day’ pretty much on a loop as a kid. It’s a film that beautifully fuses together two of my favourite things: namely, Bill Murray and time travel. The result is a science fiction comedy that’s easy on the sci-fi and big on heart. Even Andie MacDowell can't ruin this perfect film.
Nick Wilty is a circuit regular stand-up who has performed in every continent except Antarctica. See Nick Wilty live.
To my mind ‘Till Death Us Do Part’ was the only sitcom that ever transferred to the big screen successfully and had a reason for being. The back story of Alf Garnett actually portrayed him as a three dimensional character and explained why he ended up the way he did. Not only was it well acted and written (by Johnny Speight) but the whole cast showed they were actors of calibre.
Mike Wozniak is a stand-up, actor, writer and half of The Golden Lizard with Henry Paker. He was nominated for the if.comedy Award (formerly Perrier Award) Best Newcomer category in 2008 and is part of improv troupe The Bruce Collective, with Jarred Christmas.
Hmm. Tricky. The order is arbitrary to some degree as I’m sure it is with everyone, especially from number two down. ‘The Princess Bride’ made it to number one because I am never not in the mood to watch it. Although the same probably applies to ‘Airplane!’... and ‘Ghostbusters’… oh dear.
Edgar Wright co-wrote and directed ‘Shaun of the Dead’, ‘Hot Fuzz’ and ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’. He is currently working on Marvel’s forthcoming ‘Ant Man’ movie.
There is more visual and verbal wit in the opening 15 minutes of ‘Raising Arizona’ than some comedy writers or directors manage in their entire career. And even better than that, the rest of the film lives up to it. Hugely influential, highly enjoyable. A film I can watch again and again and again.
