'It’s curated and merchandised in a way that lets you discover lovely new things on every visit. Plus the staff members are knowledgeable and helpful without hovering around you and getting under your feet.'

'It has a great mix of international labels that tend to be quietly interesting and under the radar. The womenswear is quite expensive but the buy isn't your average "fashiony" fare so you tend to get things that you'll wear over a period of time as you can't put a date on it.'

'It has a magnetic pull that drags me to its fourth floor for all those cool Brit labels and then to the fifth floor for rocket salad and chips.'

'There aren't many fashion bookshops left in London. This one is really browse-friendly and a fantastic place for gifts and new discoveries of photography books. Plus, it has the best window displays.'

'It's one of those shops full of things you didn't know you needed, such as almond-scented glue and balls of twine.'

'I love the mix of interesting accessories and interior design. The owners have a very strong visual concept that starts from the chessboard floor that they hand-painted themselves through to the special exhibitions they curate. It’s on one of London's loveliest streets of independent shops and this is the jewel in the crown for accessory magpies such as myself.'

'This is a treasure trove for gorgeous, covetable vintage pieces sectioned into three distinct styles by the three buyers who share the enterprise. They first met when they had their own stalls on Portobello Market then joined forces to open a boutique underneath the landmark Trellick Tower. I’ve been shown the basement where they keep their stock – it holds some very exciting, extraordinary collectors’ items.'

'It celebrated its tenth birthday in 2011. Owner Gemma Shiel started off screen-printing T-shirts and steadily – and unexpectedly – acquired both a cult following and a flagship shop right behind Liberty. Gemma and the team design their own fashion line and stock a quirky accumulation of international labels that compliment their Kawaii sensibility. Whenever I visit, I want to buy absolutely everything, especially the pencil socks and hamburger beanie hats.'

'This is a record shop near my studio. My favourite pasttime is digging through their crates of records, collecting tunes, and these guys are really friendly and approachable. The shop has a lovely vibe – an intimate, relaxed atmosphere for the local community – and if they can't get hold of a record, they tell you which store has it!'

'I love a gift shop! The Science Museum is particularly good with lots of little games, gadgets and gizmos but as I'm not a child anymore I'll have to pick the V&A. It always gets it bang on when curating the specific merchandise for each show's theme. Further to that, the shop commissions artists to collaborate on special seasonal projects by producing bespoke designs which, over the years, will become an important archive in its own right.'

'I like that it is slap bang in the middle of W1 but feels like a hidden gem. It is consistently unique and full of non-mainstream labels.'

'In some ways, I'm ashamed to say that about 50 per cent of my wardrobe has been acquired here – the ranges on offer are second to none, especially when you're on a budget. This is about so much more than clothes for me, though; this was the first place where I got really excited about fashion and felt like I could be a real part of it. I still get the same buzz walking in now as I did when I was 12.'

'This is nothing short of a genius shop, especially when you consider it's situated just off frenetic Regent Street. Obviously the fashion is brilliant. I love perusing the vintage designer pieces. But there's a general feeling of everything here being very special with something delightful around every corner. Nothing is superfluous.'

'Located just off Carnaby Street, Chateau Roux sells a unique blend of bespoke, hand-printed T-shirts and vests, with in-your-face graphics and, of course, its "shot-blasted" sweatshirts and hoodies – yup, they're blasted with a 12-bore shotgun. This is the store of the moment.'
