EastEnd Cabaret's guide to drinking gin in London

London duo EastEnd Cabaret share their tips on finding the best gin in the city

© Tom Velvick

Dutch courage, Vera Lynn, mother's ruin – whatever you call it, gin is one of the finest drinks known to humanity. It might have originated in Holland but London is without doubt its 'spiritual' home. Bernadette Byrne and Victor Victoria of EastEnd Cabaret pride themselves on their extensive knowledge (and consumption) of this fine tipple:

BB Victy and I stole our first bottle of Gordon’s from my parents’ bar aged nine and have not looked back. We wrote our first song that night and ran naked through a field.

VV It was beautiful. Some people complain of becoming emotional, debauched or even violent when supping on the stuff. I’ve always found it to be a very pleasant experience. Fresh yet warming from the inside out, like eating fresh custard and then getting into a bath. Of custard. Or something.

Ahead of their new show, 'The Revolution Will Be Sexual' at Arcola Tent from November 16-26 2011, the gin-loving duo share their personal tips on enjoying the spirit in the capital.

'A few of our favourite gins'

The vast selection at Gerry's Wine and Spirits The vast selection at Gerry's Wine and Spirits

VV: 'Gerry’s Wines and Spirits is a Soho institution, a name passed from one gin-soaked lip to another and a haven for those who like to explore and experiment when choosing their tipple. Here are a few of our favourite gins, distilled right here in London: SW4 is a big-tasting, complex gin distilled and bottled in Clapham. It's perfectly balanced in a proper gin and tonic, poured over ice and liberally laced with fresh lime. Sacred Gin is modern, sophisticated and sexy; this gin is distilled 100 yards from the summit of Highgate Hill. Each botanical is distilled separately, at low temperatures, resulting in a fresh, aromatic bouquet. [Then there’s] Oxley. After eight years and 38 different recipes, the Oxley spirits company finally hit on their classic London Dry, a blend of 14 different botanicals. It’s clean, quaffable, and makes an excellent martini.'

BB: 'Ensure that when the bottle is empty, you place it into a recycling bin or on to a shelf. Waking up on the floor surrounded by a sea of bottles is a dangerous game; you can easily bottle yourself with a quick tilt of the head.'

'The flavoursome gin is wonderful'

VV 'Sipsmith’s Distillery is the first copper-pot distillery to open in London (in Hammersmith) for nearly two centuries, and their London Dry is a classic, stylish gin with a blend of ten botanicals. The beautiful copper still is named "Prudence" and the flavoursome gin she produces is wonderful in a simple gimlet. The three masterminds behind this endeavour – Sam Galsworthy, Fairfax Hall and master distiller Jared Brown – occasionally offer to show a select group of worthy gin-lovers around their distillery. Why not get in contact and try your luck?'

BB 'You can also try disguising yourself as a postman and legging it into the distillery once you’re through the gates. Then hide until nightfall and you will have all the gin you can possibly sample.'

'A glorious homage to Victorian drinking culture'

VV 'With a list of libations that includes an excellent selection of gins and Genevers, Worship Street Whistling Shop is an establishment to be frequented by any serious gin lover. Their wonderfully knowledgeable bar staff will quickly deduce which cocktail will please your palate and will affably inform you of its origins and ingredients along the way. A glorious homage to Victorian drinking culture, with an in-house laboratory for very contemporary cocktail experiments, this Dickensian den is a drinker’s delight.'

BB 'Nudge the bartender’s elbow while he’s pouring to ensure your single shot becomes a double. Especially the one with the moustache – he is a generous pourer.'

'The largest gin collections in the kingdom'

An array of gin at Graphic Bar An array of gin at Graphic Bar

VV 'Graphic Bar – an unashamedly modern descendant of grand gin palaces past – boasts one of the largest gin collections in the kingdom and the Juniper Society has been formed to bring London’s gin aficionados together, to appreciate the fine drink in all its forms. Meeting on every second Monday, a session with the Juniper Society may include a talk from the Tanqueray Master Distiller or a taste of Bombay Sapphire-inspired cocktails. Delicious.'

BB 'Just don’t try all the gins in one sitting. It seems like a good idea at the time but it will result in awful dancing and extremely depressing poetry.'

'One of the most haunted pubs in London'

VV 'The Viaduct Tavern is located on the site of the Giltspur St Comptor [a small gaol attached to Newgate Prison] – if you ask the bar staff nicely they will take you down to see the five original and very cramped cells in which men were held for unpaid debts. Originally built as a gin palace, the decadent Victorian interior has survived, including a wall of three paintings, each featuring a maiden representing agriculture, banking and the arts – although the poor "arts" maiden bears a scar where a drunken soldier shot at the painting in WWI. The Viaduct is said to be one of the most haunted pubs in London; its ghostly inhabitants include an ex-landlord, nicknamed "Fred", who fell to his death through the trapdoor into the cellar and has been making mischief ever since.'

BB 'Fred isn't so bad if you let him share your gin.'

'Let the drinking commence...'

BB 'Gin really is a magical beverage darlings, and many things can come from the drinking of it.'

VV 'We were offered a very interesting gig while sharing a bottle of Hendricks in some gin joint or another. A middle-aged American – white chinos, pink short-sleeved shirt, permatan – joined our table with his loud Liverpudlian lover. They were staying in a fancy hotel over the road. After watching us perform (and buying copious amounts of drinks, not to mention tipping us for our show), he told us that he worked in insurance and would like to bring us to Bermuda to play at his fiftieth birthday. We later found out that his company insures space rockets, ocean liners and fighter planes!'

BB 'I remember stepping off the plane in Bermuda and being handed a gin and tonic, but not much after that...'

VV 'This is what can happen when imbibing large amounts of gin: sudden adventures, bouts of debauchery and gaps in one’s memory... probably for the best. Let the drinking commence!'

Been drinking - and much enjoying - SW4 at The Crooked Well in Camberwell for several months now. It's great to have boutique London gins.

My favourite brand of gin is 'London Silk', which seems to have been omitted from this survey. It's afford, does the job and is freely available from most corner shops.
