In September, Time Out polled more than 100 comedy legends, including Dan Aykroyd, Richard Curtis, Edgar Wright, Stephen Merchant and Jo Brand, to discover their favourite funny films.
From their choices, we compiled the 100 Best Comedy Movies – which you can explore here and discover where classics like ‘The Big Lebowski’, ‘Groundhog Day’, ‘Withnail and I’ and ‘Airplane!’ landed in the list.
Now we want to hear about your favourite comedy films.
Which film makes you laugh like no other? Which film truly deserves the crown of Best Comedy Movie? Which funny film do you want to share with the rest of the world?
We’re asking you to pick your ultimate funny movie and tell us in the messageboard below why you’ve picked it.
At the beginning of December, we’ll pick the ten best choices and present them here. We’ll also print them in a future issue of Time Out London magazine.
So, go on, dig deep and remember the film that made you laugh the hardest and the longest…
Here's a selection of some comments we've already received to help get you thinking about your personal favourite.
‘What no “Stripes” with Bill Murray?? One of my favourites.’ - Claire
‘Whether you like the movie or not, “MASH” should be in… It was a political bomb at that time. And first of its kind.’ - Desman
‘The Three Stooges!!!!! They were, after all, originally in theatres, even though their stuff was not feature-length. In my humble opinion, 90 per cent of the stuff they made around three-quarters of a century ago is still WAY funnier than 90 per cent of the so-called "comedy" that comes out nowadays.’- msdoni
‘“Anvil - The Story of Anvil” is better than “Spinal Tap” because it's real.’ - Darren N
‘I would have liked to have seen “Hellzapoppin'” in the list. A film way ahead of its time. “Mrs Jones!… Mrs Jones!”’ - Jim Bartlett
Many of your picks are good choices that belong, but some seem to appear only for the purposes of being trendy, and aren't all that funny. Others also even seem regionally biased towards the British based films. Holy Grail is a classic, but Spinal Tap is mildly amusing at best.
A few that may have been overlooked - Slapshot, Fletch, Summer Rental, Used Cars, Every Which Way But Loose, Police Academy, Stripes, What About Bob?, The Longest Yard...
terrible list you've got there. many of the films not actually comedies. tragic. people perhaps failed to watch the films and assumed, for example, that "king of comedy" was a comedy, because it has the word in its title.
How are "Superbad" and "Juno" not on this list. Maybe the humor is a little less out there but its still freaking hilarious if you really listen to the dialogue. Plus both capture Michael Cera at his painfully awkward best!
'Bullets Over Broadway' -- a masterpiece of comedy!!
Tommy Boy - It should be included on the Carpenters car scene alone!
Shrek !!! Witty, funny, impeccably paced. A perfect script, great actors. Can we really ask for more?
Kind Hearts and Coronets, superb script and acting. A glorious gem of a film.
Life Of Brian, followed closely by Airplane and Blazing Saddles.
The list should definitely include My Cousin Vinny and Wedding Crashers is better than some of the listed movies
Dr Strangelove, to show that laughter is the sanest response to a mad world.
Gotta be Anchorman!! San Diego aka a whales vagina!
It's monty python and the holy grail. Every bit of it is funny.
It's got to be 'Some like it hot' - Marilyn was never sassier, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon are just fantastic, it's laugh out loud funny and you really care about the characters......................sublime. They just don't make 'em like that anymore...well - nobody's perfect !
I'm going to controversially say Bowfinger. Martin and Murphy both turning in great and hilarious performances as their careers sort of go off the rails! Great supporting cast too and hilarious set pieces savaging the making of movies in Hollywood.
Groundhog Day, I can watch again, and again, and again, and.. you get the picture.
Airplane ! ........of course. Watch it any number of times and there is still something new and stupid to pick up.
Airplane! because you can just quote it at random still and get a big laugh
