The reggae scene in London today is quite a different beast to what it was 50 years ago, when the capital's first black soul and reggae venue, The Q Club, opened in Paddington. The foundations are the same – equality, positive vibes and, above all, bassquaking music – but the audience has both diversified and become much younger, as has its attitude towards other neighbouring styles like dubstep, dancehall, jungle and drum ’n’ bass. Purist nights still exist, but there's a balance between traditional 'soundsystem dances', which have fewer DJs and music genres – and the new wave of clubs that mix up almost anything that is dub-reggae inspired.
