Art Malik in 'Upstairs Downstairs'
‘A BBC drama called “Passage to England” about an Indian family trying to come to this country. What was wonderful about it was suddenly seeing people like yourself. It was the first time I saw contemporary Indians on TV. Tariq Yunus – who was one of the main actors – eventually became a great friend of mine. It was wonderful to see someone like that who was just a working actor, so I thought maybe it could work for me.’
‘“The Jewel in the Crown” will always be up there. Because I had no idea of the expectations, I was just doing my bit. So the success of it took me by surprise. One of my most wonderful experiences.’
‘I’m enjoying the roles that are coming which seem to be men who vocalise their second thought, not their first thought. As an actor who’s been doing it for a while, you kind of tick off boxes – romantic lead, villain, etc. And now I’m edging towards sage-like characters!’
‘Probably most of my mates! They’re the most interesting people I know and some of the funniest too. Although the person I’d have really loved to interview was Spencer Tracy. He just made it look so easy, but you knew that so much work had gone into it.’
‘When “True Lies” came out, my father-in-law rushed out to buy all the papers. I was the one British actor in the film. And I didn’t get a single mention. Not one. So the worst thing they’ve ever done is completely ignore me.’
‘No, I’ve never done it. I might have to now you’ve asked. I know who I am. And the schizophrenia of an actor is that most people are reacting to characters that you’ve played and usually find you less appealing and not as exciting.’
‘Just walk. Anywhere. Walk and look up. The City is fantastic. I could stand looking at the Lloyd’s building or the Gherkin for a long time. I also find people smile a lot more in London. It has this reputation of being cold and austere, but I’ve never experienced it.’
‘Before “The Jewel in the Crown”, I had one that went really, really well. And the director said: “That was fantastic. But we need a name.” So I said: “Eric?” Then I shook his hand and walked out.’
Art Malik stars in ‘Upstairs Downstairs’, which starts on Sunday February 19, 9.30pm, BBC1
