352 King St, Hammersmith, W6 0RX (020 8746 6888)
Thai
The 'sour curry' hot pot with seabass (£9.95) and sour prawn curry are extraordinarily flavoursome, and are the specialities of one of the owners and cooks, who hails from southern Thailand.
Meal for two with drinks and service: around £30.
128 Edgware Rd, W2 2DZ (020 8749 5107)
Middle Eastern
In many ways this new branch of Abu Zaad is a generic Edgware Road Middle Eastern restaurant – no alcohol, tiled interior, big ornate lanterns, Arabic satellite TV – but the menu lists many brilliantly executed Syrian dishes. A bowl of fattet hommos (£3.75) comprises chickpeas, crisp fried pieces of flatbread and garlicky yoghurt, garnished with paprika and chopped parsley, served warm. Of course, the grilled meats are good too, but it’s the more unusual dishes, such as molokhia (Egyptian-style jute leaves – slightly bitter, slightly slimy – cooked with pieces of chicken, £6), that differentiate Abu Zaad from the Lebanese norm.
Meal for two with drinks and service around £30. No alcohol sold or permitted.
472 Chiswick High Rd, London, W4 5TT (020 8994 4217)
Persian
A welcome pit-stop along the Chiswick High Road, this friendly, family-run Persian is a branch of the original in East Sheen, but is no less homely. Starters cover the expected: chopped salads, yoghurts, pickles, feta and dolme... though we could eat just the kashk e bademjan (a smoky aubergine purée) with fresh sesame coated bread and leave happy.
Meal for two with drinks and service: around £35.
104 Ladbroke Grove, W11 1PY (020 7229 3010)
Turkish
This compact, no-frills Turkish BYO on Ladbroke Grove is dominated by a huge charcoal grill. Deft hands move a line of hefty meat skewers (the main draw) hypnotically across its blistering surface, while billows of smoke disappear up into the cavernous copper hood. Scoop up simple vegetable dishes and dips, with heated slabs of flat bread while your meats sizzle. The succulent skewers come served on rice with a colourful trio of raw veg – carrots, purple cabbage and wild rocket (this is Notting Hill), or on bread, smothered in tomato sauce and sharp yoghurt. Turkish tea and baklava round off the meal.
Meal for two with drinks and service: around £30. BYO no corkage charge.
144 Chiswick High Rd, W4 1PU (8747 4822/www.francomanca.co.uk)
Italian
This pizza parlour has its roots in Brixton, but its second branch in Chiswick is not a penny different. The premises may be larger but your bill will be just as mini – Franco Manca's wood-fired pizzas are truly one of London's greatest cheap eats, with the priciest version (tomato, cured organic chorizo and mozzarella) coming in at £6.95, while a frugal tomato, garlic and oregano number is £4.50. We challenge you to find a better quality pizza for the price elsewhere.
Meal for two with drinks and service: around £20
Meal for two with drinks and service: around £35.
102 Queensway, W2 3RR (020 7792 8331)
Chinese
The roast meats are the main attraction, enticing diners to wedge in unceremoniously for a quick bite. The Cantonese-style roast duck is pink-fleshed, crisp-skinned, served with a balanced sauce (not too much anise), and with a thick layer of glistening fat. Sizzling hot plates and pots fill out a meal with minced gingery pork and tofu or aubergine and crunchy vegetables.
Meal for two with drinks and service: around £35. BYO corkage from £5. Set meal £15-£20 per person (minimum two people).
444 Edgware Rd, W2 1EG (020 7258 3696)
Burmese
This tiny Burmese restaurant in a simple shop unit is an unexpected treat. Expect plenty of fish and seafood, fragrant bowls of rice and noodles, and light aromatic curries.
Meal for two with drinks and service: around £35.
5 Goldhawk Rd, London, W12 8QQ (020 8743 5194)
Polish
This is hearty Polish comfort food, and much like visiting granny, you get the feeling you’re being filled up to last a while. Plump for the varied set menu and be prepared to eat a lot. Bread smeared with smalec (pork fat), leads into borscht (white or red) and crisp potato pancakes.
Meal for two with drinks and service: around £45. Set meal £15.50 for three courses incl. vodka shot.
203 Kenton Rd, Kenton, HA3 0HD (020 8907 2022)
Indian
New owners took over this iconic Gujarati café in Kenton in 2009, but the staff and vegetarian cooking have remained reassuringly unchanged. Framed images of Hindu deities add a splash of colour to an otherwise spartan café, but the main attraction is the chef, who consistently serves a taste from 'back home' to local Gujarati families.
Meal for two with drinks and service: around £25.
332 King St, Hammersmith, W6 0RR (020 8748 0002)
Japanese
As a specialist in kushiyaki (grilled skewers), izakaya-style dishes, saké, beer, sushi and sashimi, Tosa is consistently packed with Hammersmith locals and suited Japanese businessmen. The skewers are cooked on a smoky robata grill at the front of the restaurant, where a few diners can get a front-row seat; otherwise, the small wooden tables at the back under a skylight make a cosy perch.
Meal for two with drinks and service: around £40.
I love Makan Restaurant in Portobello. They serve the best Malaysian dish at very affordable price! Cheaper than Tukdin's or Jom Makan. and tastier too!
Anyone looking for a meal that is actually inexpensive should head to Tooting - Upper Tooting Road is lined with excellent, good value Indian restaurants - you can easily get dinner for 2 for less than £25. As for Mexican in London - don't bother. Good Mexican food does not exist in the UK.
These are not cheap £45 quid - try being an average person rather than a thrifty middle-class bargain hunter
Kati Roll Company on Poland Street. This is by far the best quick/cheap Indian snack food place in London that I have been to. Never gets mentioned for some reason.
New Italian next to Putney station called Leonardo's. Homemade italian food buffet and pizzas both for £5 eat in or takeaway. That combined with great coffee make it a no brainer.
a true cheap eats classic.
Kanapina have the most amazingly well spiced chicken roti roll and their lassis are to die for! Great addition to Canary Wharf.
Newly opened cheap little Italian pizza slice/buffet , gorgeous decor and very friendly staff. little gem .
Cheap eats my arse. £45 for 2. My idea of cheap eats is a £4 dinner.
Guys,
New Fish & Chips just opened on Dawes road at Fulham
great food, big portions, nice chaps and small bill
highly recommended
I love F&C !!!
I'm sorry, but did I miss something about the definition of "inexpensive" or even "cheap"? Since when is £45 considered inexpensive? Let's see what you can come up with for around a tenner each!
there are a lot of good places to eat ...especialy the Afro-Carribean and Vietnamesse cuisine are the best imo...next week i arrive to London, so i really looking forward for good meal :)
Pilpel in Spitalfields for fantastic falafel in pitta breads and lots and lots of freah tasty salad for under 5 pounds! Brilliant!
My Old Place is indeed a great buzzy place, but it's more Dong Bei food than Sichuan. Food from 3 provinces in NE China bordering Korea & Russia . Lots of vinegar, pickles, lamb, cumin and dry chilli.
It aint high chinese cuisine but it's very enjoyable here.
Hi Briana,
You are too right!! There are several really good Mexican restaurants in London: Wahaca, which is a chain, is the only one I have been to so far which serves Mole sauce. However, Cafe Pacifico in Covent Garden is a great old favourite. I am sure there are others - will readers let us know about them?
There are plenty of very good Turkish BBQ restaurants in London, and especially in Stoke Newington.
There is a fantastically cheap one in Winchmore Hill (Simal) on Green Lanes. For £6 we often get one of their unbelievable meals: mains, such as shish or Beyti (with yoghurt and butter sauce) which is £6.50, and it comes with rice, grilled veg, salad, bread and a lovely flan style dessert! Honestly, go and beat THAT time out!! And the food is lovely and fresh. In their mixed grill, they even have grilled kidneys (if you like offal).
Time Out, you never ask anyone to come up this way - Palmers Green, Winchmore Hill, Enfield, and beyond!!
Glad to see some of some of the my local great restaurants around Holloway Road and Finsbury Park getting a mention, but Tayyab's has very much gone down hill. Now has a real maximum turover, get 'em in and out approach so going there is a rushed, hurried and crushed experience. Also seen increased prices and decreased in portion size. Has lost it's appeal for me.
Chipotle??!? Maybe it's because I live in the U.S., but this place is mediocre at best. Surely there are better Mexican restaurants than this In London!
Im a bit confused by putting Busaba on the list, excellent food but its averaging at 10 pounds for a small dish and you need at least 3/4 dishes to for it to constitute as a meal! The rice alone is over 8 pounds and thats a portion for one.
However Mooli's is my new haunt and I love it, and im going for breakfast next week at Dishoom which im looking forward to.
Hi Erin,
We've cast our net far beyond Soho and King's Cross. If you use our map you'll see our critics have recommended 70 restaurants outside of central London.
As well as using the map you can also use the filters at the top at the top and bottom of the feature to look for places in North, East, South and West London.
Commando Chicken - you're right to say this isn't the same list as the one in this week's magazine - it's all those places and more! We've combined the list in the magazine with previous cheap eats our critics have selected. That gives you the ones featured in the mag and another 68 to pick from too.
Thanks for commenting all and keep your suggestions and thoughts coming.

Talad Thai on Upper Richmond Road in Putney is one of my favourite cheap eats. You can have a Thai currey, rice and beer with enough change out of £20 to have a couple of cheeky beers on the way home
This is not all the places isted in the mag this week, for some reason.
Busaba on a list??? its not cheap;/ very good food but c'mon :))!
busaba isnt cheap. You also left out Tarot, Cha cha Moon, Soho Joe's etc...
The last meal I had at Mangal Ocakbasi was awful. The place smelt of toilets and the food was average. This place used to be good, go elsewhere in Dalston there are more affordable and better quality places.
Are the cheap eats of London really only to be found in Soho and King's Cross, or were these the results of the journalist's research on their walk home?
