Barneys New York
Top designers are represented at this bastion of New York style. Its
co-op branches carry young designers as well as secondary lines from
heavies like Marc Jacobs and Theory. Every February and August, the
Chelsea ‘co-op’ branch hosts a warehouse sale, with 50 to 80 per
cent reductions.

Bloomingdale’s
Bloomies is a gigantic, glitzy department store offering everything
from handbags and cosmetics to furniture and designer duds. Brace
yourself for the crowds – this store ranks among the city’s most
popular tourist attractions, right up there with the Empire State
Building. Check out the cool new little-sister branch in SoHo.

Henri Bendel
Bendel’s lavish quarters resemble an opulent townhouse. Naturally there
are elevators – no one expects you to walk; this is 5th Avenue – but
it’s nicer to saunter up the elegant, winding staircase. Prices are
comparable to other upscale stores, but the merchandise somehow seems
more desirable here – we guess it must be those darling brown-striped
shopping bags.

Jeffrey New York
Jeffrey Kalinsky, a former Barneys shoe buyer, was a Meatpacking
District pioneer with his namesake shop, a branch of the original store
in Atlanta, Georgia. Designer clothing abounds here – Lang, Versace and
Saint Laurent among other brands. But the centrepiece is the shoe
salon, which features Manolo Blahnik, Prada and Robert Clergerie.
