    Addict
    Recently opened, Addict is the joint venture of two fashion fanatics who decided to put their passion for buying to good use. The upshot is this cutting-edge boutique, which has a great selection of desirable labels – Cacharel, Sass & Bide, Jill Stuart – and hand-picked new designers.

    This charming outlet for Wendy Mullen’s designs is a very New York-selection of lightly patterned blouses, delicate dresses, retro slack trousers, capris and cropped cardigans. Wendy’s designs for Wrangler are also sold here, under the (very hard to find) label Wrangler 47.

    Dave’s Quality Meat
    Dave Ortiz – formely of urban threads label Zoo York – and professional skateboarder Chris Keefe stock top-shelf streetwear in their wittily designed shop, its decor complete with meat hooks and mannequins sporting butcher’s aprons. Home-made graphic print Ts are wrapped in plastic and displayed in a deli case.

    Designer Resale Corps
    This consignment shop sells mint condition designer seconds and samples, from labels including Chanel, Gucci, Oscar de la Renta and Hermès. Items are kept for only 90 days and then sold on, with prices plummeting every 30 days.

    Foley & Corinna
    Recently cited as Scarlett Johansson’s favourite New York shop, Foley and Corinna stocks a very cool combination of in-house designs and carefully chosen vintage pieces. The store is worth a visit for the decor alone, with its painted watercolour collages from floor to ceiling, and sumptuous upholstery and furnishings. Unusually for a vintage boutique, there is also ample provision for the boys, with a new men’s offshoot a stone’s throw away.

    Hotel Venus by Patricia Field
    Most famous for her eccentric and dazzlingly original styling on ‘Sex and the City’, Patricia Field’s SoHo Boutique is a one-stop glamour shop. The NYC version of the King’s Road’s Ad Hoc, Hotel Venus pioneers new label launches (it was the first to stock Gwen Stefani’s LAMB range).

    Jack Spade
    Men get all their carrying needs covered, courtesy of this new Spade outpost for men. Run by the husband of Kate (bag designer to stylish New Yorkers for over a decade), Jack Spade sells a range of bags and holdalls to suit all wallets and wardrobes.

    Kirna Zabete

    A pricey but chirpy and informal fashion haven, with designers including Balenciaga, Dolce and Gabbana and Hussein Chalayan, plus a new range of trendy babywear, which is a firm favourite with style-conscious new mums like Kate Hudson.

    Local Color
    Agatha Ruiz de la Prada’s new SoHo store is a riot of colour with chromatic rainbow stripes bouncing off the walls and into the kooky clothing, plus homewares and stationery. Let bold striped skirts with applique flowers, funky pencil cases and bright cloth handbags light up your life.

    Old Navy
    Old Navy is a bit like the H&M of New York: there are lots of branches, they’re huge and dirt cheap, and New Yorkers love them. They’re great for basics – sweatshirts, blue jeans, the best white T-shirts, stripy tops, plus everyone gets their flip-flops here. Another big draw are the baby clothes – there’s a huge selection. Come here to stock up.

    Prohibit NYC
    City guys can get all their necessities at this spare, polished upscale streetwear boutique, from well-made threads and special edition sneakers to haircuts (with hot towel treatment, $30) while seated in an apple-red vintage barber’s chair.

    What Comes Around Goes Around
    A much-loved store which houses the largest collection of vintage denim in the US, as well as hand-picked vintage pieces designed to reflect seasonal trends. It’s also worth checking out the in-house collection of new and customised garments.
