    CB I Hate Perfume
Before training as a perfumier at Kiehl’s, Christopher Brosius was a taxi driver whose delicate sense of smell was offended by the mass-market fragrances worn by his fares. This parlour in Williamsburg is Brosius’ antidote to ubiquitous cosmetics-counter perfumes. Choose between nostalgia-inducing natural fragrances such as ‘chocolate chip cookie’ and ‘snow’, or make an appointment with the ‘artist’ himself. Bronsius will discuss your favourite memories, smells and sensations with you, then mix up a totally bespoke fragrance.
    CB I Hate Perfume, 93 Wythe Avenue, Brooklyn (+1 718 384 6890) Subway: L to Bedford Avenue. Open Tue-Sat 12noon-6pm.

    Fabulous Fannies
Get past the name because this is an amazing vintage shop which specialises in one-off, period and retro sunglasses, as well as outlandish frames which can be fitted with prescription lenses.
    Fabulous Fannies, 335 E 9th St (+1 212 533 0637) Subway: L to 1st Avenue or 6 to Astor Place. Open daily 12pm-8pm.

    Girl Props
Inexpensive (‘we never say cheap’) jewellery store, like a slightly classier Claire’s Accessories. Has a massive selection of currently fashionable ‘jewels’, with an abundance of oversized beaded necklaces, Alice bands, kitsch brooches and hoop earrings
    Girl Props, 153 Prince St (+1 212 505 7615) Subway: N, R, W to Prince St. Open Mon-Wed 9am-8pm, Thur 9am-9pm, Fri, Sat 9am-10pm, Sun 10am-8pm.

    Rare Device
With a no-nonsense policy of stocking ‘good stuff for you and your home’, this Brooklyn shop features precious and useful objects from around the world. Small, hard to find West Coast designers sit alongside local Brooklyn brands and the work of owner Rena Tom, offering a mish-mash of paper goods, books, jewellery and select clothing lines.
    Rare Device, 453 7th Avenue, Brooklyn (+1 718 301 6374) Subway: F to 7th Avenue. Open Wed-Sat 12noon-7pm, Sun 12noon-6pm.

    Ricky’s
Make-up and costume emporium on the must-see list of any stylists visiting New York. As well as the usual make-up basics (the store carries an incredible number of beauty lines, many unavailable in the UK), Ricky’s has a brilliant selection of wigs, eyelashes, and over-the-top accessories.
    Ricky’s, 44 E 8th St, between University Place and Broadway (+1 212 254 5247) Subway: 6 to Astor Place or N, R to 8th St. Opening hours vary.

    Salvor Kiosk
Now here’s a nifty USP: this little corner of SoHo’s Salvor Studio displays exclusive homeware and accessories from faraway destinations. Collections are assembled by in-the-know locals’ selections, and a different location is featured every couple of months. Currently up for grabs are Japanese must-haves, with Sweden arriving at the end of February.
Salvor Kiosk, 2nd Floor, Salvor Studio, 95 Spring St, between Broadway and Mercer St (+1 212 226 5155) Subway: R, W, to Prince St or 6 to Spring St. Open Wed-Sun 12noon-7pm.

    Tender Buttons
No, not the ladies’ appendage described by Gertrude Stein in her book of the same name. Tender Buttons is an eccentric shop teeming with fashion fastenings of all descriptions. From Swarovski crystals to woven leathers and vegetable ivory, TB caters for those who are one coat short of a button .
    Tender Buttons, 143 E 62nd St, near Lexington Avenue (+1 212 758 7004) Subway: 4, 5, 6, N, R, W to 59th St-Lexington Avenue or F to 63rd St Lexington Avenue. Open Mon-Fri 10.30am-6pm, Sat 10.30am-5.30pm.
