    Zadie Smith

    New entry
    47 Zadie Smith
    Clever clogs
Why? Her latest novel, the EM Forster-inspired ‘On Beauty’, has been a triumph for Smith, winning this year’s Orange Prize.
The bare facts Smith, 31, lives in Kilburn with her husband, the poet and novelist Nick Laird.
In her own words ‘Anything I write now is like a legal proposition, which is immensely stressful. When you’re 15 and someone asks you what you’re writing, you tell them. And now it’s all a business of contracts and money.’

    93 MAS ramsay.jpg
    Gordon Ramsay

    No change from 46
    46 Gordon Ramsay
    Foul-mouthed foody
Why? At last count Gordon Ramsay Holdings employed nearly 1,000 staff in London alone, and Ramsay’s personal wealth is estimated at around £55 million.
The bare facts He’s said quite enough in his just-published official autobiography.
Did you know? He will soon appear on ‘The Simpsons’, teaching Homer how to cook.

    New entry
    45 Peter Morgan
    Script machine
Why? British screenwriter of the moment, 43-year-old Morgan’s work is hard to avoid. His play ‘Frost/Nixon’ just transferred from the Donmar to the Gielgud. His TV drama ‘Longford’ aired on ITV in October. His film ‘The Last King of Scotland’ opened the London Film Festival last month, and ‘The Queen’ surpassed all expectations at the UK box office and is now wooing audiences in France.
The bare facts He first grabbed attention with ‘The Deal’, directed by Stephen Frears.

    Down from 99
    44 Kate Moss
    Attractive Croydonite
Why? Despite the ‘cocaine thing’ in September last year, this has been Moss’s best year yet. She netted £30 million in the last year fronting ad campaigns for the likes of Dior, Chanel and Burberry. Philip Green (see 47) has given his blessing (and £1 million) to her next project: designing a clothing line for Topshop. In November she picked up Model of the Year at the British Fashion Awards. Bullet-proof.
The bare facts Discovered in JFK airport at the age of 14, Moss became the postergirl for the waif look after appearing in the Face.
In her own words When asked by Vanity Fair ‘What do you do?’ Moss replied simply, ‘I rock and roll.’

    Down from 85
    43 John Gilhooly
    Wigmore wallah
Why? Gilhooly became chief exec at Wigmore Hall this year, while Paul Kildea was named artistic director. On Kildea’s abrupt resignation, Gilhooly assumed artistic responsibilities.

I have to agree with people above. usually I'm on the side of the edgy cool gang who break taboos, but this time I'm firmly in the shocked-of-tunbridge-wells camp. Even if the gang is ruling a particular part of london, it is utterly irresponsible to glorify them and that is exactly what this entry is doing. Also disgusted by the number one entry but that's purely a subjective response...

I'm not sure how you can justify putting violent teenagers on your list of 'London's 100 top movers and shakers'. Unbelievably irresponsible, stupid, and quite unnecessary. Smacks of a pathetic attempt to generate interest or a laugh. Do you not think, just maybe, if one such 'mover and shaker' were to read your list, this kind of recognition might spur them on to commit more crimes?
