  • Van Gogh, 300-year-old pot plants and dairy-based culture: Amsterdam's got the lot

  • Six great reasons to visit Amsterdam

    1. The Van Gogh Museum
The Van Gogh Museum boasts more of the painter’s works than anywhere else on earth. Among the 200 paintings and 500 drawings on show are nine self-portraits and many famous flowers (‘Irises’ and ‘Sunflowers’).
    Paulus Potterstraat 7, 570 5200, www.vangoghmuseum.nl

    2. The Supperclub
The Supperclub is the quintessential Amsterdam eating experience. The menu changes weekly, taking flight into the wilder reaches of gastronomy, while the ambience – wacky acts, beds as seats and unisex loos – more than matches the food. You won’t forget a meal here.

    3. Hortus Botanicus
The Hortus Botanicus botanical garden (Plantage Middenlaan 2A, 625 9021/www.dehortus.nl) pricked out its first seedling in 1682 and four centuries later it offers a perfect place to unwind. After all, it’s home to the world’s oldest pot plant – a 300-year-old cycad in the palm greenhouse – and descendants of the first coffee plants smuggled out of Ethiopia, so take root on the lovely terrace and soak up the sun.

    4. Melkweg
Melkweg used to be a dairy but it’s now Amsterdam’s premier one-stop night-out destination. Take your pick from live music (there are two concert halls), theatre, cinema, an art gallery, a café and weekend club nights.

    5. Jordaan district
Amsterdam is a city for wandering, and that applies to shopping too. Head to the Jordaan district and just follow your eyes (for colourful boutiques, markets and galleries) or your nose (to bakeries, old-fashioned bars and cafés). This is an Amsterdam many tourists miss.
