    Warsaw

    Warsaw

Though almost everything in Warsaw has been built (or rebuilt) since the end of WWII, the re-creation of a historic quarter was so successful that the Old Town became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1980 – the churches, palaces and market-place evoke seven centuries of metropolitan life. Warsaw’s past and present are best understood with the help of an aerial view so take a trip to the thirtieth floor of the Stalinist Palace of Culture.

Warsaw is arguably the world capital of poster art. The Wilanów Poster Museum is housed in part of the fantastic Wilanów Palace complex and opened in 1968. In addition to housing a huge collection of both Polish and international posters from two centuries, the museum also presents changing contemporary exhibits. 10-16 ul. Swiss masterchef Kurt Scheller oversees the smart restaurant and is ready to meet any challenge. Poland’s prettiest city is a dream for walkers and architecture fans. At the southern tip of the Old Town, the castle and Gothic cathedral dominate Wawel Hill, both full of fabulous artworks, tapestries and historical treasures. Start at the 16th-century Old Synagogue which is now the Museum of Jewish History. The Jewish quarter’s resurgence is manifested by the bars and cafés, especially along Szeroka and Estery streets. +48 12 422-51-55, www.wawel.krakow.pl
