    Sweet Tater

'The two gals who own Sweet Tater are the store’s best advertisement. They have a great Californian vintage style going in the store. Tough boots and pretty checked shirts, not to mention the best selection of original ’70s denim flares. Ruffles and chunky knits together – love it!'
    Sweet Tater, 280 Mulberry St, between Prince & Houston (1-212 219 6400/www.sweettater.net) Subway: B, D, F, V to Broadway Lafayette. Open Mon-Sun 12noon-7pm (closed Mon until Apr 1).

    Circa Now
'Sexy! Fabulous for vintage shoes and the ladies who own this have a wonderful eye for early ’80s (before the ’80s went off the fashion rails). Last time I was there I bought a black wool catsuit with stirrup bottoms and some bright green Gloria Vanderbilt sandals. Also love their selection of tight little jackets.'
    Circa Now, 238 East Sixth St, between 2nd & 3rd Avenue (1-212 254 2555/www.circanownyc.com) Subway: C, E to Spring St. Open Mon-Sun 12noon-8pm.

    Eye Candy
'Without a doubt the best vintage store in NYC for costume jewellery, handbags and sunglasses. It is like an Aladdin’s cave of goodies collected by some old movie star. Rare finds and talking points abound. I bought a huge plastic bracelet made up of domino pieces that I get stopped in the street about.'
    Eye Candy, 329 Lafayette St, between Houston & Bleeker Sts (1-212 343 4275/www.eyecandystore.com) Subway: F, D, V to Broadway Lafayette. Open Mon-Sun 12noon-8pm.

    Resurrection
'Couture vintage expertly chosen. I have met the owner, Katy Rodriguez, on numerous occasions and she looks like a fashion historian rather than your ordinary shop owner. This is museum-quality vintage with prices to match but it is worth a look for the sheer inspiration. Also, the type of items you find in here are the type that accumulate value (rather than lose it) as time goes by. Think fine wine.'
    Resurrection, 217 Mott St, between Spring & Prince Sts (1-212 625 1374/www.resurrectionvintage.com) Subway: J, M, Z to Bowery. Open Mon-Sat 11am-7pm, Sun noon-7pm.

    Chelsea Girl Couture

'A great place to find that one special piece, the kind that, next season, could inspire the new Marc Jacobs collection. Ahead of the game. I have a pale cream coat from there that I have worn to a few meetings with Barney's and have been asked if I bought it in the designer section.'
Chelsea Girl Couture, 186 Spring St, between Thompson & Sullivan Sts (1-212 343 7090/www.chelsea-girl.com) Subway: E, C to Spring St. Open Mon-Sun 12noon-7pm.

    Manhattan Vintage Clothing Show
'The best vintage clothing shows that happen three or four times a year attracting designers and collectors alike. I bought the most amazing vintage heavy velvet winter coat from there with a huge fur-rimmed hood and sleeves. This fair has plenty of showstoppers, but be prepared and get there well caffeinated – it’s a sensory overload. Register online for times and venues.'

    Stella Dallas
'This is the best store for floral print ’50s skirts and little cardigans – really feminine vintage with a little rock ’n’ roll. I bought a huge wide leopard print belt from there and wear it with many of the vintage floral skirts. Eclectic and eccentric.'
    Stella Dallas, 218 Thompson St, between Bleeker & W 3rd (1-212 674 0447) Subway: C, E to Spring St. Open Mon-Sun 12.30-7.30pm.

There's a great new resource for locating fabulous boutiques in New York and several other U.S. cities. It's at www.storeadore.com. It reminds me of Zagat.com, but for boutiques. You can search several different ways and even make shopping maps for yourself. It's great for planning a day of shopping, but it also saved me a lot of time when I was travelling and just wanted to find a shop nearby that carried the boutique brands that I like. I highly recommend checking it out.
