  • Escape to Prague

  • By Time Out editors

  • One of the most beautiful cities in Europe, Prague is a breathtaking fairytale of architectural treasures. Known as the ’golden city of a hundred spires‘ the Czech capital‘s gothic, baroque and art nouveau wonders jostle for your attention. Take your time; avoid the crowds and soak up the Bohemian atmosphere

  • Old Town square
This square is the bustling centre of historic Prague, thronged with tourists, locals and traders. Among the magnificent Gothic and baroque churches surrounding the square is a medieval clock where crowds gather every hour between 8am and 8pm to see the procession of figures representing the apostles.

    Charles Bridge
A stroll across this fourteenth-century bridge spanning the Vltava is the quintessential Prague experience. Come early in the morning as the mists rise from the river, and you’ll have peace and quiet to admire the wonderful statues of thirty saints that line the balustrades.

    Prague castle
For a thousand years the mighty castle – home to presidents, kings and emperors – has loomed over the city. The centrepiece of the complex is the Gothic basilica of St Vitus which contains the bejewelled tomb of King Wenceslas, the patron saint of the Czech nation (www.hrad.cz).

    Josefov
Prague’s Jewish Quarter has the finest collection of Jewish historical monuments in Europe. Six of its highlights constitute the Jewish Museum: the former Ceremonial Hall and the Old Jewish cemetery, as well as the Klausen, Maisel, Spanish and Pinkas synagogues (www.jewishmuseum.cz ). They provide a fascinating insight into a turbulent history.

    Czech beer
The Czechs have a flair for beer, both in terms of production and consumption. As well as drinking more beer than any other country, they make world-famous brews like Budvar, Pilsner Urquell, Kelt and Staropramen (to name but a few). Duck into traditional Malostranská Pivnice at Cihelna 3, below Prague castle (www.malostranskapivnice.cz).
