Your critical guide to arts, culture and going out in the capital

  • Escape to Budapest

  • By Time Out editors

  • The waters of the Danube are spanned by graceful bridges joining the two halves of the Hungarian capital – Buda and Pest. Founded by the Romans, settled by Magyar nomads, conquered by Ottoman sultans and ruled by Habsburg emperors, Budapest is a uniquely exotic city, as well as one of Europe‘s most beautiful

  • Parliament
An icon of Budapest is its breathtaking neo-Gothic parliament – interestingly modelled on London’s own seat of government. Nearly mothballed by the Soviets, the building is once again the heart of the Hungarian state. You can visit the crown jewels worn by Hungarian monarchs since the Middle Ages (www.budapest-parliament.com).

    Heroes’ Square
This monumental square was built in 1896 to celebrate 1,000 years since the Hungarian (Magyar) nomads settled on the Danube. These days the seven statues of the mustachioed chieftains who once ruled the wandering tribes glare down at footloose skateboarders.

    Castle Hill
Stroll through several centuries of history in this Unesco World Heritage Site. Don’t miss the beautiful Matthias Church on Holy Trinity Square or the imposing Royal Palace housing the Hungarian National Gallery and the Budapest History Museum. For a stunning view take the funicular railway up from Fisherman’s Bastion near the Chain Bridge (www.budapestinfo.hu).

    Thermal Baths
Since Roman times the hot springs beneath the city have been used to create soothing thermal baths. The art nouveau Gellért baths are terribly grand (www.gellertbath.com).

    Liszt Ferenc Square
Whether it’s hearty goulash or a cool beer you’re after, head for this square near the opera house on Andrássy Avenue and enjoy Budapest’s bar and café scene. There are several places to choose from but there’s no better place to relax than the sunny terrace at Café Vian (www.cafevian.com).
