    • Amano Café

      Victor Wharf, Clink St, SE1 9DW (020 7234 0000/ www.amanocafe.com).

Amano have added free wi-fi to its reasonably priced menu of pizzas, sandwiches and coffee, but its fast-paced atmosphere means it’s probably not your best bet for an all-day office alternative. There are other branches in Potters Field Park and in Herne Hill too.

    • Bar Story

      213 Blenheim Grove, Peckham, SE15 4QL (020 7635 6643/ www.barstory.co.uk).

Nestled under the arches of Peckham Rye Station, there’s more than a hint of the east European squat bar about this establishment. With its whitewashed walls, laptops with internet access and open-plan kitchen, Bar Story has a buzzing communal atmosphere and a local hipster vibe. There’s also an outdoor area with old railway sleepers converted into benches for smokers. Read more

    • Firozzi Arabic

      349 Kennington Rd, Kennington, SE11 4QE (020 7582 0757).

Scarcely bigger than a teabag, this family-run café is all comfy sofas, while delicious Middle Eastern wraps should sustain you through a whole day’s surfing.

    • Prince Regent

      69 Dulwich Rd, SE24 ONJ (020 7274 1567).

The Prince Regent tavern strikes a fine balance between gentrified gastropub and local boozer. It serves good grub and boasts a thriving quiz night every Tuesday. A laptop and a pint isn’t an uncommon combination here, so don’t feel shy (don’t pop the lid on your MacBook during the quiz – very bad etiquette). Read more

    • Southbank Centre

      Belvedere Rd, SE1 8XX (0871 663 2501/ www.southbankcentre.co.uk).

There is free wi-fi throughout the Royal Festival Hall though you’ll find the strongest signal on the second floor, by the café. Expansive views of the Thames and Somerset House make for an amenable atmosphere if you can cope with the anonymity of the pared-down institutional space. Read more

A great pub called the Cumberland Arms at the end of Northend Road near West Kensington / Barons Court / Hammersmith has free wifi too. Fantastic ales and food and also a great cappuccino for £2.50. Not the cheapest pub you'll find but staff is very friendly and won't make a fuss even if you spend all day there with just a coffee. Highly recommend this place.

    Sarah,
If you sign up to The Cloud in McDog it is free and you can then use The Cloud anywhere where it is used to supply the free WiFi. That includes Wetherspoon (I am posting this from a JDW pub) and some other pubs. The Green Man at Great Portland Street uses The Cloud and is part of a chain so all of theirs are likely to be OK as well.
    Phil.

I'm back in the Antipodes for the rest of this year.
On Wellington Waterfront (between Queen's Wharf and Te Papa Museum) there is free wi-fi sponsored by TradeMe, the local equivalent of E-bay. There is talk of extending the free wi-fi across central Wellington by the time of the Rugby World Cup (in September and October).
Seventeen miles from Wellington, the Upper Hutt Public Library has free wi-fi for up to four hours/day, though Wellington Public Library charges for that way of accessing information.
