    • Minkies Deli

      Chamberlayne Rd, NW10 5RQ (020 8969 2182/ www.minkiesdeli.co.uk).

Housed in a glass-fronted building, this popular Kensal Rise café-cum-deli is an agreeable place to spend a summer’s day with your laptop. A great selection of hot and cold food and pastries adds to its appeal.

    • The Tea & Coffee Plant

      180 Portobello Rd, W11 2EB (020 7221 8137/ www.coffee.uk.com).

A welcoming village atmosphere and a real dedication to coffee make this café feel a world away from many of the nearby Notting Hill style-over-substance hangouts.

      The Troubadour

      263-265 Old Brompton Rd, SW5 9JA (020 7370 1434/ www.troubadour.co.uk).

A key player in London’s 1950s boho folk movement, The Troubadour has seen a lot of history. Bob Dylan played his first London gig here; it was also an incubator for Private Eye, as well as the friendship between Ken Russell and Oliver Reed.

    • The Westbourne

      101 Westbourne Park Villas, W2 5ED (020 7221 1332/ www.thewestbourne.com).

Ripe with the kind of buzz that’s conducive to getting the creative juices flowing (or at least making you feel as though you should be doing something more important than shopping on eBay), The Westbourne is a surprisingly down-to-earth pub in the heart of Notting Hill.

    • Electric Brasserie

      191 Portobello Rd, W11 2ED (020 7908 9696/ www.the-electric.co.uk).

Next to the Electric Cinema (the one with the sofas), and beneath exclusive members’ club Electric House, the Electric Brasserie completes the trio of Notting Hill refinement. Ask your smartly dressed waiter for the code. It gets very busy on the weekend. Read more

A great pub called the Cumberland Arms at the end of Northend Road near West Kensington / Barons Court / Hammersmith has free wifi too. Fantastic ales and food and also a great cappuccino for £2.50. Not the cheapest pub you'll find but staff is very friendly and won't make a fuss even if you spend all day there with just a coffee. Highly recommend this place.

    Sarah,
If you sign up to The Cloud in McDog it is free and you can then use The Cloud anywhere where it is used to supply the free WiFi. That includes Wetherspoon (I am posting this from a JDW pub) and some other pubs. The Green Man at Great Portland Street uses The Cloud and is part of a chain so all of theirs are likely to be OK as well.
    Phil.

I'm back in the Antipodes for the rest of this year.
On Wellington Waterfront (between Queen's Wharf and Te Papa Museum) there is free wi-fi sponsored by TradeMe, the local equivalent of E-bay. There is talk of extending the free wi-fi across central Wellington by the time of the Rugby World Cup (in September and October).
Seventeen miles from Wellington, the Upper Hutt Public Library has free wi-fi for up to four hours/day, though Wellington Public Library charges for that way of accessing information.
