    • McDonald's

      www.mcdonalds.co.uk

Makydee’s ‘re-imaged’ many of its branches (there are 181 in London) and installed free wi-fi across the board. Sit in one of the caring green chairs and sip a Fairtrade coffee.

    • Coffee Republic

      www.coffeerepublic.co.uk

The majority of Coffee Republic bars offer access to a free wi-fi zone for instant access to the internet from laptops or PDAs. You get the first ten minutes free but further usage requires purchase.

    • Leon

      www.leonrestaurants.co.uk

The wünderkind of healthy fast food has nine branches across central London and the City. All are wi-fi enabled. The Spitalfields branch gets very busy at lunchtime, but is a good place to go when quiet. Read more

    • Corney & Barrow

      www.corney-barrow.co.uk

The wine merchants-turned-bar has 13 branches across the City and Canary Wharf. Unsurprisingly, clientele consists almost entirely of City workers, many of whom go there for breakfast (from 7.30am) and catch up their personal emails before the working day begins.

    • Pret a Manger

      www.pret.com

Pret’s tables are perfectly adequate to fit a laptop, coffee and sarnie. Most of the 150 London stores are wi-fi enabled; ring the branch you intend to visit before making a special trip.

    • Wetherspoons

      www.jdwetherspoon.co.uk

Wetherspoons has enabled free wi-fi in all of its 60-odd branches in London.

    • Le Pain Quotidien

      www.lepainquotidien.co.uk

Le Pain Quotidien was established in Brussels in the 1990s and has become a hit with well-heeled Londoners since its arrival in the UK. Thirteen of its 15 branches have free wi-fi (Marylebone and Hampstead don't).

    • Starbucks

      www.starbucks.co.uk

The 'Starbucks worker' has become a feature of everyday London life – more than 400 Starbucks coffee shops in the UK now have wi-fi access, with a good portion of these situated in London. If you want to get online for free, you'll need a Starbucks Card to access the Starbucks BT Openzone.

A great pub called the Cumberland Arms at the end of Northend Road near West Kensington / Barons Court / Hammersmith has free wifi too. Fantastic ales and food and also a great cappuccino for £2.50. Not the cheapest pub you'll find but staff is very friendly and won't make a fuss even if you spend all day there with just a coffee. Highly recommend this place.

    Sarah,
If you sign up to The Cloud in McDog it is free and you can then use The Cloud anywhere where it is used to supply the free WiFi. That includes Wetherspoon (I am posting this from a JDW pub) and some other pubs. The Green Man at Great Portland Street uses The Cloud and is part of a chain so all of theirs are likely to be OK as well.
    Phil.

I'm back in the Antipodes for the rest of this year.
On Wellington Waterfront (between Queen's Wharf and Te Papa Museum) there is free wi-fi sponsored by TradeMe, the local equivalent of E-bay. There is talk of extending the free wi-fi across central Wellington by the time of the Rugby World Cup (in September and October).
Seventeen miles from Wellington, the Upper Hutt Public Library has free wi-fi for up to four hours/day, though Wellington Public Library charges for that way of accessing information.
