My favourite route: Food and Drink

    A Gold, Spitalfields

  • Spitalfields
I love this part of London because the layers of history peel back, showing the waves of immigration and their culinary impact. From Liverpool Street station, head up Brushfield Street, with Hawksmoor’s Christ Church Spitalfields ahead of you. The provisions store A Gold looks suitably historic, but is a fairly recent shop selling traditional British sweets, cheeses, preserves and other items.

    Brick Lane

    Daring dining?
Commercial Street used to be one of London’s seamier streets, but the stretch behind Old Spitalfields Market has become almost gentrified. The menu at St John Bread & Wine is the gris(t)liest thing you’re likely to find, with lamb’s tongues, pig’s tails and snails on the menu.

    Brick Lane
Go down past the former Huguenot silk-weavers’ homes of Fournier Street and turn left onto Brick Lane, where London’s Bangladeshi curry corridor sits alongside funky street art, trendy shops, ice-cool bars and music venues. For the authentic taste of India, you can stock up on spices and marvel at the array of tiffin tins at Taj Stores.

    24-hour treats

Early morning or late at night, Beigel Bake is still the place to gorge yourself on great-tasting salt beef bagels.

A pint in the Krays’ old manor

Head to the Carpenter’s Arms. While you’re here why not take a photo of yourself and upload it straight to Facebook – you can log in from your BlackBerry. What a great way to entice your friends to join you!
