He might be 15 years older than Get Loaded staple Shaun Ryder, whose Happy Mondays headlined the first two years of this event (2004-2005), but arse-flashing garage-punk mutineer Iggy Pop has more vitality in just one of his bare pectorals than a full complement of Happy Mondays rampaging about the Bahamas on crack. Headlined by a lithe, still-rocking Iggy And The Stooges, the rest of this Sunday’s Get Loaded bill preceeds in a similar vein – the organisers opting for the muscular and/or relevant over the tubby, ‘lads on the piss’-friendly nostalgia that Get Loaded tended towards pre-2007.
Joining Mr Pop at the latest (fifth) and greatest Get Loaded – the final outdoor festival of the summer within the city limits – is blues-punk cum soul yeller Beth Ditto with the Gossip, plus other fine rockers, like The Hives and Supergrass. But why tell you about the bands you probably already know about, like Gogol Bordello and Kate Nash? Instead, we urge you to check out smutty hip hop nerds and Time Out On The Up stars Plastic Little; young Roots Manuva producer and dancehall fan Toddla T; folk-pop cuties Noah And The Whale; near-industrial electro duo The Presets; chart-smashing nemesis of Dizzee, Wiley; and sullen art-pop gang, Ipso Facto. All this and not a maraca-wielding old man in sight.
Tickets from ticketmaster took an age to come.
Food and drink prohibitions are ridiculous and obviously designed to make money.
I'm sure bands will be great.
