  • I went to the Sunday "Family/Kids" day at the Carnival and was hugely disappointed! There were hardly any costumes. Almost all the "floats" consisted of massive sound systems with a crowd of people in different colour T-Shirts dancing erratically or walking behind them. It was totally NOT child-friendly. I cannot see what is good about pushing a pram with a small child in it behind an ear-splitting sound system - this seemed to happen in so many places - or seeing an adult carrying a tired baby through an atmosphere full of cannabis smoke and barbecue fumes. There were no activities for kids, nothing child-friendly like amusement parks or games or places to try costumes. It was disappointing to see that hardly any London schools had created innovative, smart carnival floats. The Hackney One parade was much much better. I was very surprised to see so much alcohol consumed in the streets (where is the focus on Kids???), so many bars selling rum and beer (where were the kids drinks?) and so much drum and bass music (where was the music for kids??) . The whole thing just seemed an excuse for an adult street party which had nothing to do with kids or families and where irresponsible parents blew cigarette smoke in their children's faces. Where unthinking adults were allowed to dance in sexually provocative ways in front of babies, small children and teenagers. As a Londoner I was totally disappointed and will be recommending that friends with kids do not attend the Sunday next year. What is the point? It could have been organised in a much better way and did not come remotely close to the excellent standard of organisation of the Olympics. Boris if you read this, please do not allow this carnival to happen unless cannabis and alcohol are banned and the kids day actually is focused on kids. Kids are not allowed in pubs yet they can come to a whole street that has been turned into a giant drinking venue, overpriced food and where rubbish lines the streets and people urinate publicly in local gardens. Its time for Notting Hill Carnival to either be run properly or banned completely. It is certainly no longer a showcase for Caribbean culture, which in my experience has always been a beautiful thing! Boris, please do something!
