Marking its twenty-first anniversary in 2013, Open House London, the hugely popular, capital-wide annual festival of architecture, takes place over the weekend of September 21 and 22 under the theme 'Celebrating architecture, people and place'.
The festival allows access to hundreds of buildings not normally open to the public – private homes (100 are involved this year), government buildings, historic sites, educational establishments and many others.
Site visits to Battersea Power Station, built in the 1930s as a coal-powered fire station and powering over one fifth of London at its peak, will be the last opportunity to see one of London’s most iconic buildings before it undergoes redevelopment to become a new London district with shops, cafes, restaurants and bars as well as 3,500 new homes and 18 acres of green space.
The highlight visits this year are sure to be 30 St Mary Axe (the Gherkin) and Tower 42, but 'East London Transformation', a look at regeneration in the lower Lea Valley around the Olympic Park, is also likely to be popular. Indeed, there's a wide range of events, from a whistlestop architectural ride on a Routemaster bus to boat tours and visits to major construction sites led by the Institution of Civil Engineers, from projects organised by the Landscape Institute to the annual moonlit walk (Friday September 20) to raise funds for Maggie's Cancer Centres: this year renamed the 'Culture Crawl'. There will also be opportunities to talk to experts about eco, zero carbon and retrofit buildings, and plenty of family-friendly events, including quiz trails and model-making.
Of the more than 700 venues involved, the vast majority will be open to all on a walk-up basis, but around ten per cent (almost certainly including the Gherkin and Tower 42) will require advance booking; for details of how to book see www.londonopenhouse.org. The website will be updated with this year's programme on Thursday August 15.
